nice touch in closing the forum down as a mark of respect

It's probably the biggest human event in recent times, I can't think of anything else.

It was an attack on western civilisation as a whole and very relevant to the entire western world.
The towers contained people and companies from around the world.
It has change world events and world politics.

RIP to those who lost their lives

I agree it's a big event, a tragic event.

I don't agree with all the fuss that is made over it, when you stop and think to how many lives this one event has cost the world. The Middle East has lost hundreds of thousands of innocent people over this.

Please don't think that I'm some horrible person because of my opinions on this.

If Spie continues to do this as he has done, good on him, that's no problem for me, I'm sure there are many people who were directly and indirectly affected by this and want to show a mark of respect. I'm in full support of that, and respect them for their decisions.

Its the last biggest event to happen in the western world, so its the one most people first think of events wise. It may not have caused as many deaths as other eastern world events but yeah.

911 was a tragic for sure , and if feel sorry for those who lost people on that day ,
but not listening to foreign intel agencies when they tell you there is a credible threat is a bit careless to say the least

ONE good thing did come out of it , America looked at terrorism in a different
light when they were on the receiving end of it.

I mean all those republican organisations operating in America and sending
funds to the IRA were put out of business within a few weeks of 911 , thereby
hastening the peace process in NI.

Certainly not, But I do think it has plenty to do with the UK and world history. Including the wars and the innocent deaths you talk off.

This was the catalyst in what caused so much death and destruction around the world. I know it makes me sound awful, but I just don't buy in to the fuss made over this particular day. I'm sorry people have died, but as a result of those few thousand deaths, hundreds of thousands have died, out of what just seems revenge.

It's the eye for an eye thing.

This one event, has caused the death of hundreds of thousands, I can't agree with the revenge mentality that this seemed to be.

I have to admit. Unill I logged onto OCuk I completley forgot what day it was :(

Thanks Spie :)

and me, nor did i know what the OP was going on about until i started reading posts about lost lives then it clicked :)

...and 8 years wow, dosn't seem that long ago

I watched it on the TV as well, but never think about it, until it's drummed into me by all and sundry. TBH unless you are American or knew one of the 70 brits that dies there really is no significance now. Just another terrorist incident like the dozens before it (and couple after) that killed brits...

There are hundreds of other terrorist incidents I have heard about in my life but it was the fact that I was watching this particular one live as it happened, and the implications that it has had on the world since, that made this event stick with me. I've never seen anything else like that unfold as it happens.

Everyone watched this happen. It's our generation's Kennedy - I guarantee if you ask anyone, they'll know exactly where they were and what they were doing when the towers went down.

I totally echo these excellent points by Acid. It wasn't an attack on the US per say it was an attack on the western way of life. The method and the target where selected for maximum effect, not necessarily loss of life, but world wide media coverage.

It was a tragic event conducted by misguided fools. You can't compare this to a natural event like a tsunami or hurricane or even a war. These people boarded planes (a symbol in many ways of western culture) and flew them whilst full of people into the center of global finance.

We should all pay respect to those who lost their lives IMO.

Fair enough, I know it's down to the owner's discretion, but I'm confused as to why the forums are not also closed for July 7th too.

Boston Big Picture, is always full of amazing shots.

Some really amazing pictures on that link.

Powerful picture of the man falling, and it's nice to see how they're developing the land now, Freedom tower, when is it going to be finished ?

I don't think it's just a forum thing, most people seem to see 9/11 as the BIG one. It came first, and well, because they were two iconic buildings, destroyed by people with planes (or thermite or lizardmen, or whatever if you're a conspiracy theorist) it is a bit more of a shock. For America (and we all know how typically Americans feel about their country) to be attacked on it's own soil in such a manner, and with the way the American media penetrates our own, it's no wonder that the event is made more fuss of then the 7/7 bombings.

It is unfortunate, really, but people's perspectives are skewed by the way things are portrayed.
