Nikon D750 announced.

Thanks for that. Always just used Canon as that's the kit I've always had access to, however I'm looking to invest pretty heavily over the next 18 months so will hold off and see what the 5D4 is like.

God dammit

If you guys not read Ross Harvey's review, don't….it will make you want one, even me…

The 5 stop under exposed push is utterly unbelievable, I would have binned that shot, it was just black to begin with.

I do really want one, but just cba to go through selling all my Canon gear...! I use my Fuji's more now anyway. I'm going to get the 7D2 or a 1Dmk4 for the action side of things.

Ditto, all accumulated, if I take even a 10% loss on each lens and flashes, I'll guess a minimum £2k loss and then another £2k more to get everything.

5D4 better kick arse....

Pretty sure I'm going to push the button on one of these. Where I live (non-UK) I have a choice of:

  • NIKON D750 Kit, AF-S VR 24-120mm - £2103
  • NIKON D750 Kit, AF-S VR 24-85mm - £1766
  • NIKON D750 Kit, AF-S 50mm 1.8 - £1488

I'm thinking the 120mm would be the perfect walk-around lens. Hmm...

God dammit

Great review, never heard of the guy so enjoyed the read, thanks!

but but but, but according to the canonites here dynamic range doesn't matter and you always nail the exposure.....

This kind of stuff is making me want to switch but I can't justify the costs.

Currently own :

5D3
5D2
6D
Sigma 35mm f1.4
Canon 24-70 f2.8 x 2
Canon 70-200 f2.8

Want to go full primes for weddings though so need to work out what it'll cost doing it both ways before I commit to any more Canon!

Canon used the same Sony sensor as the Sony RX100mk3 in their new G7X.

This to me is a sign that perhaps they are realizing the shortcomings of their sensor design team and are willing to try to make a partnership with Sony. I don't think that would be good for the industry as it will limit competition. Sony sensors are used in Pentax Olympus, and Nikon cameras. Nikon does some sensor design and work with others such as Toshiba and Aptina.

Canon used to rule the world with sensor design no one else could get close to but they haven' really progressed much in 8-10 years. No one could afford to make FF sensor when Canon started, no one had reliable CMOS tech or could reach the same noise floors, and they always bumped resolutions above the competion while maintaining best in class IQ.
Nowadays Sony, Nikon (with Aptina), Toshiba, Panasonic, samsung, Fuji all make sensors that are years ahead of canon in terms of ADC noise.

I can get perfectly good pictures with a 30D but it's nice to know I can mess up and still get it back...

And that is why people love the D800/D700/10 sensors - you have the ability to rescue under exposed photos, more over you have the ability to capture the natural world in a more natural way that reflects how we view the world.

Had a go with D810's. Mine may need to go back to Nikon for sensor adjustment (due to affected serial numbers), but haven't tested them yet to see if they have the fault.

Upped 5 stops in LR in tungsten light.

D700 was 'ok' at dealing with banding. It wasn't great.

With those low light images and the fact that it has a tilt screen (D7000 keeps giving me a bad back from crouching on low landscape shots), screams buy me when I have saved enough to go full frame.

Is Nikon metering that bad that you need to be able to do this all of the time? ;) :D

Seriously though, it is very impressive. I haven't ever seen anyone deny that. I can only think of one shot that I have ever taken that needed to be pushed anywhere near that far though, and it wasn't an important shot. So it remains a nice to have for me and the bottom of the pile when it comes to the reasons I'd very much like a D750 (it's not insignificant though).

There are reports canon have made advancements in sensor tech, so you'l might want to hold off switching for now. Besides gear doesn't matter apparently! :p

I just can't see it in the near future. The closest they'd get is by licensing tech from Sony :D
