Nikon D750 announced.

Well it's finally arrived!

Initial impressions are great. The deeper grip over my D7100 is so comfortable, the camera is a small fraction wider, a little taller but only slightly heavier.

Not had a chance to look at any images yet but I've taken a few at high iso for comparisons.

Shutter has a much thicker clunk to it, the 6.5 fps felt nice and fast.

Looking forward to having a look at the images and getting out with it!

Interestingly the D750's 51pt AF covers a smaller area than than the D810 and is closer to the D600/D610:

Not that that is a problem really, the whole internet rage over the D600's 39pt AF system was blown completely out of proportion if you actually compared coverage areas. If the D600 was released first and then the D7000 then people would have been rejoicing that a AF system form a FF camera was put in a DX camera.

The reduction is related to prism sizes, the D810 has a larger viewer finder. The reduced area explains the increased sensitivity.
Ultimately, if you want wide AF coverage then you want buy a crop camera like the D7100

Yeah that was brought up shortly after release, I find the missing corner AF points odd as well. Although that is a Nikon thing from the look of it.

I don't see how the smaller area impacts individual AF point sensitivity though?

Interesting review, I'd sort of thought a D810 would be the ultimate upgrade from my D7000, but the votes seem to be going the D750's way...... but then I don't do weddings :)

So.... I'm going over to Nikon! Will keep the 5D3 + 24-70mm as a backup, but will dropping about £5k on 2x D750's + some primes.

It's for the weddings and we were going to spend that kind of money on new kit, it just seemed daft to spend it on any of the current Canon range.

Will be a pain as the studio where I work in the week, gives me full access to everything Canon but I'm sure it will be the right decision for the long run.

What is Nikon offering that Canon can't match?

I'm guessing you had a fondle of one somewhere then Tommo?

Not yet, I'm going to be hiring one hopefully for the weekend for a wedding at Christmas. It may cost £100 but worthiitiin my opinion. I'm sure it'll be like picking up a camera for the first time, trying to work out where all my buttons have disappeared to.

We've been hiring a lot of our kit (from my work, so at almost non-existent costs to us, on the understanding that it was a temporary fix. So sometime in January we need :

2x bodies
85mm
35mm
24mm

Purely off the strength of all the reviews, examples and blogs I've seen, the Nikon sensors are miles ahead at the moment. I hate flash, so shadow recovery is vital to my wedding photography, along with high iso performance. Which from the examples I've seen knock the 5D3 out the park.

What flash system do you currently use?

There are examples of wedding shooters exposing for the sky and then pushing the shadows in PP etc. If I find the link I'll post it. You need to have a look for them as it can look a little odd, but that may be the PP style.

With a d800 I try to expose for highlights and bring back shadows in pp, It works well for most shots with little degradation in quality

Some shots still require a flash to get the best balance of light and iq imo

Nghhhh I can get a Nikon D750 with 24-120 lens for £1663 (outside of UK)... that's a good lens to start with right? Or would you recommend a different lens to start with as a general all-purpose walkabout jobbie?

I'm looking at upgrading a D7000 with kit lens and a 35mm prime, so its not like I have invested a ton in my DX system already.
