*** Nintendo Switch ***

For when it's on the go, it makes sense to me, well rather I can see why they're going down that route. But for when docked at home?

Just wish it were optional or more advanced :(

Most people will just be using their own voice chat systems. This is an idiotic implementation.

Why this never came with a wireless headphone/mic is just plain daft. They are not helping their online system at all. Also using my phone, wow. Nice one Nintendo.

I love Nintendo, but this is just plain daft.

On better news my splatoon 2 got sent out on Monday, so should have it for release day :D

I hadn't really thought about the issues when you are away from wifi. I guess they just decided to go for a single solution that covers all bases even if not so well.

They can't have any bluetooth devices as they have reserved all of the bluetooth channels for 8 simultaneous bandwidth heavy controllers to be connected.

They don't even allow voice communications via a wired headset though which is moronic.

To me, you need to use your phone for tethering when without wifi anyway. And they wanted a way to get the voice and sound through your headphones. You're already going to use a phone for tethering so use it for voice as well, its one less thing for the Switch, which means less battery and less resource drain.

But then if you want voice on the go you're dependant on the phone :p

It is a solution which causes other problems! Bah!

What I wish (you might be able to but I am not sure yet) is if you could use the phone/app with your headphones and not have it connected to the Switch. So when docked sound still comes out of the speakers like normal but voice through a headpiece. I don't see why this wouldn't be possible.

The case and cover looks nice. Do you have to take the case off if you want to dock it?

It's got a velcro flap on the back by the lower half of the console, makes removing and putting on just a few seconds each. But yes it needs to be removed to dock. Although saying that, that is an assumption, I've not tried it, but wouldn't either. I can photo it if you like :)

Yep they're the ones :)

I got mine from Amazon though. Price is the same within a quid or two.

Still not sure how to go about protecting it. I dock and undock frequently and don't want to add and remove a case all the time.

Are there any hard cases that fit a dock...
I don't wanna scratch this beauty but do t wanna fiddle about.

What other options have people done?

Cannot emphasize just how quick it is to remove/fit my case :) - it's a second to remove it, about 2 seconds to fit it.

I also wanted something softer to compress and take the shock if its dropped. Although I imagine over time I'll experiment with various combinations. It's inevitable in devices like this.

Me and Raymond are going to order cityslicker carry cases later in the year to save on shipping :)

To answer my own question, from the Nintendo FAQ

Can I use a headset or headphones for voice chat?
Yes. You are able to use headsets or headphones connected to your smart device. If using a wireless Bluetooth headphone or headset with your smart device, ensure it supports the HSP or HFP Bluetooth profile.

Please note that game sounds normally output from the TV or Nintendo Switch console will not be heard from your smart device.

I love the Switch but this whole Phone App for voice chat thing just sounds awful, who seriously thought this was a good idea?

This honestly looks like the best case out there.... shame its another 3+ months away

It's an afterthought work around idea that the did not include the hardware inside to make this possible in the first place.

It's a terrible idea but the best solution given the circumstances.

No, it's far from the best solution. I think a lot of people would like to have had the option of using a wired headset as an alternative solution. The hardware is there for that option but Nintendo are useless at online ecosystems.

So I picked up a case & joy con grips mainly for protection whilst commuting. I have the OZRLY hard shell case & screen protector and having been impressed with their stuff so far, I looked to see what they had.

First up, the grips. (excuse the cat hair in the photos, my sofa is like a magnet for it)

The fit and feel is really nice! They add some booty to the joy con and despite my small hands, it makes them feel much better when handheld, both on the console and off. They clip on at the top and slide onto the bottom. It would have been nicer if they were more secure around the bottom but its not like they come off easily so this is a minor thing for me.

Next up, the case. This is easy to put on and off via a velcro flap. It's got a suede like feel to it and instantly reminded me of the Amazon Kindle cases.

Also it gives more options for kickstanding, more support as well

Overall, I am really pleased with the combo. With both fitted it all goes in the hard shell with an Anker 20100 and short USB-C cable so its pretty much covered now wherever I go!

With the grips the + & - are a little more restrictive but I thought this would be the case anyway and have mostly gotten used to it now. £18 well spent :)

This looks perfect Imo, may have to go down this route

For anyone getting splatoon 2

My friend code is SW-7224-3720-0726 (why the hell are we still dealing with friend codes ???)

I'm getting this and the Oculus rift the same day so I'd imagine I won't get to try it for a while.

It does work well. :) Maybe not for everyone but it depends on circumstances.

My issue was I would get to the train station, pull the switch out of the hard shell then suddenly feel like it was very naked and was paranoid of dropping it. This fixes that and covers me in all bases.
