*** Nintendo Switch ***

I just observe the console market now. As an outsider looking in, the Switch is an extremely hard sell for consumers like myself. For example, if i wanted to play some new Nintendo games like Breath of the Wild, having to pay £300+ (handheld+games) for the privilege is an extremely hard pill to swallow.

The Church of Nintendo members will always buy these systems. But for those of us that maybe want to dip our toe in and try Nintendo games, the price is extremely off putting.

Not as high as the pc barrier to entry cost.

I need to buy a PC to play PC games. You're weird.
 
£300 to play Zelda plus/or the other titles? Worth every penny.
More so with the ever growing selection of games, Xenoblade 2 and Mario alone make it a no brainer. :)
I am a PC gamer at heart as well.

Exactly this.

I guess you could argue that with the Windows 10 being able to play almost Xbox games it cancels it out but it still applies for Sony.

Right now if I want to try some PS4 exclusives I need to buy a whole console etc

You cant even buy a high end GPU for 300 quid

You complain that there is a monetary barrier to entry for Nintendo games. This barrier exists and is even greater for people who want to play PC games.

I'm not sure why you are finding it so difficult to grasp that concept. It's really very simple.

You are comparing PC to Nintendo (a non-console gamer = PC gamer, and you mention the barrier to entry involved with trying out the other side of gaming), and then throw your toys out of the pram when someone else mentions that trying out the other side is even more expensive for those going the opposite way. That's very strange behaviour.

Its really not all that expensive for a games console though. Sony and Microsoft charge around the same so not really that hard a pill to swallow. As someone who has bought most consoles in the last 20+ years. Where as if I want to play PC games I need to spend at least double that to get a rig to even play some games at a minimum and then constantly buy parts to keep it usable.
 
Maybe nintendo could make a none handheld switch box with a controller at a cheaper price for people who have no interest in hand held gaming
 
I haven't hidden the fact that I don't like the Switch, there has been nothing since release that I have liked other than Mario Kart.

However after going to the EGX show, I can see that things may get better. Mario Odyssey looked pretty good, Fifa looked good (although I don't like football) and Elder Scrolls played very well on the handheld and even Pokken looks OK.

It was also good and a surprise to see the big Nintendo boss at the stand! The reps were all really helpful/polite and knew about the games that were on display, that in contrast to the Microsoft reps who were just clueless.

To be fair that is the case of exclusives for any console or PC. If you want to go all in, I agree it is pricey - pro pad, memory card, case etc. but that is really for the die hard fans, what it comes with is more than enough to play and see if you want more.


That said, one advantage Nintendo does have is its obscene value retention (just look at the Wii U price), that means even second hand you can sell the console and its games for very close to the original cost because the console has not lost value over time and if you have kept it in good condition you can easily sell it not far off shop price. So while it is a chunk of money you need to drop down to experience Nintendo (again, no different to any other console), if you decide it isn't all you hoped for, you can sell it on for minimal loss quite easily (if you only played Zelda, the 100+ hours you would get from that probably justifies the ~£25 you would lose from resell)
