Just on channel 5, a news report of the new rules on artificiall light at night time.

They said its in the interest of astronomers and people who get affected by the light at night time. Lights should be switched off at night time, otherwise owners could face a fine.

I'm sorry, but i feel this is such an idiotic move, and i am glad that the authorites have so much time on thier hands to worry about such petty stuff.

So i am guessing this will have no impact on crime?! I'll excpect rape, violence and burglaries to rise at night time then :(

But having said that, i guess the best advice would be to stay indoors at night time?!

Would it not be best to try and combat crime, which is rising, rather than worry about light?!

Ah well, guess the upside is more stars at night, which is so much more impportant.

I am actually quite sensitive to light but i can't say it's People's houses etc that make a difference, it's Street lamps and Headlights which are the brightest and affect me.

I'll tell you, if some copper comes round here telling me to turn my yard lights off I'll be asking where the HELL he was when my car got broken into.

It isn't rising. Visible crimes (such as fights in town when drunk etc) are rising but overall it's going down :)

But surley switching lights off will increase such "visible crimes"? I.e. more easier for a car break in?

About time.

The amount of automatic halogen lights blind me when going past somebody's front is stupid.

What really rakes me, is when they're pointing at other people's houses, or the light at least hits part of it.

I don't think it's "petty stuff" at all, light pollution looks horrible and is a waste of electricity anyway much of the time. no one's suggesting you turn off vital lights in places where they are needed to stop crime, and, believe it or not, the police will keep fighting what you call "real crime" as well!

depends how you look at it,

its like waiting lists, they say they are falling, but I've found out some information that points to hospitals fidiling the books.

your supposed to only wait 6 months for ANY operation, thats the MAX for a waiting list, over that they hospital trust has to PAY for you to have it done privartly (sp pls).
but whats happening is the Doctors are having the meeting, telling you your on the list, then having another meeting 6 months 9 months 12 months down the line THEN putting you on the list as they can do the op within the 6 month limit then.
I know a few people who've fallen into this problem in more than one hospital and in more than one area.

its a stupid system, theres no NEED for this 6 month farse of a max list time, its just so the government can fiddle the lines and show that waiting times are down!

So how does this affect the fluorescent lights Glasgow Council has put up along Dumbarton Road that are very bright? ;)

I don't see what the problem is with this. I used to be able to see a lot of stars and although I don't live in a densely populated area I usually can't through light pollution.

Don't see why people need more lights now than previously, so I think this is a fair thing.

I'm with basmic. The motion-activated security lights are a real PITA. I have no problems with them in general, it's when they go off when you simply walk past the house that annoys me. Not only this, but most owners have their lights so it illuminates half the ******* street as well.

Halogen security-lights = great.
Positioning Halogen security-lights in places where they practically turn night into day for half the street and/or go off whenever someone merely walks past the house on the street = bad.

Stars are cool. Since moving to the Midlands i can really appreciate a dark night with clear skies.
Folk round here said i was mad but without a doubt light polution effects what we see in the sky.
As far as criminals go my Hammer is always ready and waiting for visiting criminals.
Failing that i have my trusty keyboard close to hand. ;)

Leaps into Keyboard ninja pose ready for battle. :D

Well, if honnestly the UK is safe, and is ready to go dark at night time.

Then why dont the star loving hippys go to a park or an area outside a residential/populated area with £1000's of equiptment at night time?

Keep the cities and streets lighted for saftey. And go to a field to look at stars.

Ps, i have a street lamp outside the front of my house, its annoying, cant someone switch it off?!:p

In our old house we might just as well not had a kitchen light for that very reason. Walk in the kitchen and ZING!!!

Best of it was the garden and the alleyway were like the black hole of calcutta.

I can see why they have put this 'rule' in, you should see the HUGE light that shines towards our house at night. For some reason the "Clear Water Group" or whatever they're called down the road find it necessary to shine a massive light over... hmm 3 houses and a ton of fields.

Er, what? Is that a statement?

Why should they have to a) go away from their home due to someone else polluting the area around them and b) spend a lot of money as well?

There are loads of areas around here unlit. I'd feel perfectly safe walking through them.

Should have been like that ^ sorry!

In my mind personally i think darker areas is just a breading ground for crime. Just my thoughts anyway.

And a lack of experiance on my part, is never living in an area with excessive light, so would not know how bad bright lights can be. (living in areas like St anns, Radford, and my good home town Rugby, which when the sky is clear at night i can see the stars)

Having seen what darker conditions can result in, is the whole reason why i feel that there should be light at night time.

I guess if you live in a safe area with less or no crime problems, switching the lights off would not be a problem.

Go on then, how on earth are you qualified to complain about the new legislation? :p
