No Stubble at work.

A company can impose and enforce a dress code / policy - which can include requirements as to facial hair - so long as the reason behind it is for genuine business purposes. You have a client facing role. They are a brand. They want you to present the brand image. Frankly, you have a job and if you want to keep it why would you not abide by the dress code?

Indeed.

Plus if you add in the bit about food handling, hygiene becomes of the upmost importance. If you fail to follow their guidelines and have to be disciplined a number of times, they are well within their rights to get rid of you and you won't have a leg to stand on.

Supermarkets are huge.... low level workers are tiny.
They will get rid of you for nothing and there will be dozens of other people waiting to fill your shoes.

Their policy on dress standards, inclusive of facial hair, will have been explained to you on your induction and you will have agreed to it on signing your contract.

Simple solution... You want facial hair, grow a full beard or at least tell them it is what you're doing. Keep your stubble neatly trimmed and they'll never bother you again.

Facial hair is only a food hygiene issue for fresh food handlers, for shop floor workers it isn't an issue.

After having a beard for many years and finally shaving it off, I can say I would now never go back to having a beard. Electric shaver every morning, only takes 2 minutes. :D

Even though a shelf stacker may not be coming into direct contact with fresh food, they are still handling food products.... so again, if you don't adhere to their grooming policy, then they have a much greater case against the employee, than the employee does trying to claim unfair dismissal.

There is of course still the fact that its a job where you are likely to be in contact with customers and if their policy is that they don't want stubble, then thats their prerogative.

Where I work there was a rule that you had to be either clean shaven or grow your beard for a minimum of 30 days. And of course for equality reasons that applied to the women as well as the men.

Was more or less ignored and after a restructure last year it seems to have been forgotten about....

Well you are right - they can do one, but the flip side is when push comes to shove and someone has to go - you'll be top of the list. Unless of course you really wind up management and then they will find something official to let you go over.

Pick and choose your battles but be aware what might happen if you do want to stand your ground

Just shave and get on with it,I've worked for tesco for 15 years and had to shave everyday when I was on security, now I'm on nights it's less relaxed.

Am i right in saying this infringes my freedom of expression and that i can tell my managers to stuff it?

I'd fire you on the spot for that alone. Freedom of expression, jesus, you're stacking shelves, you're not the bloody Dalai Lama. Get in the shaving thread and buy some stuff you hairy reprobate....or become a muslimaniam

I used to work in a business with a food factory and in roles where you handled food it was either clean shaven or wear one of these:

** No hotlinking **

I agree it does seem a bit excessive for handling prepackaged food (surely by that token people on checkout would have to be clean shaven? There's a dude in our local sainsburies who looks like he's in Grandaddy) but it's not totally unusual to your workplace.

I don't think freedom of expression is gonna wash btw.
I'd wear the stupid facemask for lols.
