Noise Pollution... I'm to blame!

Heyup guys. First off, i'm a really nice guy. I'm not some obnoxious **** who thinks he's above the world and can do what he wants.

But i like noise, and i LOVE loud noise.

Now for christmas i had a new AV amp and i've been spending the past few days getting new speakers and things for it. I'm doing the usual child menality thing of wanting to play with my new toys so i've been watching films and listening to music etc quite a lot for the past few days (OMG Star wars is awesome with proper surround sound :D).

My neighbours moved back yesterday though, and come 10pm tonight one of them is banging on the door wanting me to turn it down. Fair enough it was pretty loud, but he wants the music to be off after 10pm every night because its his final year of uni.

Now don't get me wrong, i don't want to be a total nob, but 10pm is a bit early isn't it?

I was sort of dumbfounded at the question and kind of went into autopilot mode and said yes to any and everything he said just to keep the peace (and so i could get the door closed as its freezing cold!).

Obviously i don't want to be the annoying guy next door who has his music silly loud until stupid times in the morning but truth be told, i usually have any music off by 11.00-12.00 anyway and then its just some mellow (read quiet) 360 playing until i go to bed. But 10.00pm for any audible noise from my speakers/sub is a bit drastic isn't it? Especially considering we're all students living in a student street?

What do you guys reckon i should do? Leave it till 10.00pm and then switch everything down to a whisper or what?

If its loud enough for the neighbours to notice at 10pm, then aye.. its a bit too loud

Well ive got to have all loud noises down after 8pm as next door have young children.

I can still enjoy music from my PC speakers (Not cheap crappy things either!) at a decent enjoyable level.

Everyone is different though.

So in reply to your earlier question, no 10pm isnt too late for someone to be asked to keep it down a bit.

to loud tbh at 10! some people do actually goto sleep around that time, i wouldnt want to upset my neighbours in a street i would like to live on for a period of time, not worth the hassle you might get back.

maybe your neighbour gets up early and you dont so he decides to get the hoover out every morning ;)

If you have it that load that they can hear it through the walls, then for gods sake man turn it down.

Just try and keep the peace, try and settle for better at weekends perhaps. Don't just annoy the neighbours, as tempting as it can be.

Test what volume you can play music/games at without it being audible outside your house then stick to that after 10.

If a neighbour asked me to turn it down I would as there is no point falling out with them.

Your neighbour could very well have 9am lectures, however a neighbour could well have the following:

Young chiildren
Works earlies
Works nights
Just wants some simple peace and quiet:p

If I heard next doors music, at any time of any day I would be hacked off, I just don't think I should have to put up with it. In halls at uni (was in a house last year) I keep music/games at a sensible level at any time of the day.

If you want to make more noise do it in a detached house, nothing annoys me more than noise when I am trying to sleep. From people I have known on engineering courses, 10pm is a good time to go to bed if you have 9am lectures , especially for a finalist (even though personally I would be up later than that).

I honestly don't mind people making noise around me. My other housemate works nights and regularly comes home to play his acoustic guitar at 5.00am. I get that my sleeping pattern is a bit weird and while i might not be up until 10-11am i know other people are.

I know having it loud is bad late at night, but i think the main problem is the bass rather than the volume. He's complaining that he can just hear thumping bass through the walls. Now I've had a quick check in different areas of my own house and it seems to be the case. My speakers sound really quiet in my room, but the bass from them is much louder in other rooms of the house. Its not very loud at all in my room.

Please bare in mind that a clearly audible bass from the speakers happens in other parts of the house, despite it being quiet enough in my room to hear everything going on outside the house pedestrian and traffic wise with the window closed.

My music is never loud enough to hear if your standing outside the house. Just it seems this one guy is a bit anal and his room is right next to mine :(

You don't mind it, but I think he is reasonable with his last year of uni too.

Soundproof your room?

I've just shut my door and stood outside the room, the music isn't loud enough to hear outside my room but downstairs the bass is travelling straight through the house.

I've no idea why this is happening....

Your neighour is being very reasonable in asking you to turn your music off at 10pm. I wouldn't put up with thumping bass through the walls at any time of day. The low frequencies resonate through floors and walls even at lower volumes.

When listening to music all I ask for is the right amount of bass so the music sounds complete, only sometimes I wack it up, and I'm in halls, never got any complaints yet!

If i heard loud music next door after 10pm at night mid-week i would knock the door.

Turn the base down, play with the levels of the AV Amp so that you still get some volume, but without rumbling the rest of the house, and more importantly your neighbours.
