Noisy neighbors

I'm actually on the other end of this problem at the moment.

There's an old guy living above me who constantly complains about the noise I make, not to me but to the council. When I first moved in he came round and complained and I turned it down for him and offered him my mobile so if it's ever too loud just call and hang up and eventually I'd be able to get an idea of when and how loud I can get away with it. He refused and skulked off. I haven't switched my sub on since and I'm in bed by midnight most nights yet he now complains direct to the council. He's even complaining when my flatmate has the TV on in the front room after midnight (she works in a bar so is always up quite late) despite the fact I can't hear it in the adjoining room. It's ridiculous. I can't cough in my own house without him filing a complaint.

Last time I stayed at Paul's we were woken by the neighbours playing exceptionally loud music at about 3am. So loud it sounded as if it were in the next room.

Good job it was Motorhead and not some rubbish or I'd have had to complain.

Maybe soundproofing products are the answer, like the ones Von Luck posted. It wouldn't be wasted money as then you can play your music as loud as you want without having to worry.

My Father in law had this problem, he surmised that if they were playing music until 5am then they would have to be sleeping during the day, so he left an old-school telephone (the proper "ring-ring" type) by the adjoining wall to the neighbours house and left it ringing all day.

It did the trick, he never heard a peep out of the neighbours afterwards

:)

I gather they are very expensive, and not very effective.

rofl!

If we all bunch together, maybe we could bribe some terrorist squad to conduct a bombing campaign on some of our worst-hit, chav-infected areas?

"Take off and nuke it from orbit - the only way to be sure!"

I had this problem at a previous house, the son next door was an "aspiring dj" (read chav) and would practise on his decks till all hours. I'm a reasonable man but one night I snapped, stuck my band's pa speakers against the wall and played Slayer's "Angel Of Death" at full volume on repeat for an hour or so.. it sort of helped for a bit, he got the message but then after a few weeks it all started again. This time I hit the roof, grabbed my 4ft samurai sword and went round there threatening to "cut his ******* legs off" - never heard form him again.

I'm definitely not advocating violence or threats, just trying to point out that retaliation with loud music didn't work for me in the long term.

What a great film :)

Good shout but I'd get the crappiest CD I could find some think like Jimmy Nail Crocodile Shoes and play that full blast all day...... :D

Im sorry to say this but im a noisy neighbour myself, lots of dance tunes banging out till 3am on a weekend, but to be fair I am very quiet in the week to compensate, always having parties and invite my neighbours to be kind - im sure if you have a word they will turn it down, I do if asked :)

We used to be in a semi next to noisy neighbours. Apart from reporting every incident to the environmental health officers, we actually went next door to try and sort it out. It turned out that every piece of equipment capable of making a noise was against the partition wall. Some repositioning and carpets helped, but then again, they were reasonable people. It doesn't sound like you're in the same position.

Good luck.

Has anyone tried taking the same music tracks and inverting the phase on the computer then playing it back in sync?

Might help cancel out the sound or just make it sound bad but im not sure.
