Nokia N8

Looks like it could turn out to be a decent phone, but it's quite ugly and I can't help but feel that Symbian will let it down, and that's coming from someone with an N95 8GB.

I like the design. Single piece anodised aluminium too, so it should feel very nice in the hand.

It's also the first phone from Nokia to ship with the new Qt application framework. That should lead to a greater number and higher quality applications being developed for Symbian. Qt is a massive leap forward and I've already developed a few apps for it myself.

Meh:/

Out in August/Sept probably. The OS looks poor/tired and yet again the CPU is slow. Well done Nokia.

Another N97, fantastic on paper, packed with spec, built by idiots :(

This. They're doing a lot of things right, such as free turn by turn Ovi maps & the good quality camera optics. However, they can't seem to decide on a smartphone OS. Is it Symbian ^3, MAEMO, Meego? The N900 had a lot of potential but are they ditching MAEMO/Meego in favour of Symbian ^3?

Looks good, but Nokia's problems of late have been to do with execution more than anything else, so I'll remain skeptical for the time being. HDMI and 802.11N are good from a pushing-things-forward perspective.

@Meatball: Nokia's strategy has always been that Maemo (Now Meego) would be a niche platform for one or two devices a year. I don't know where you think you'd read it, but Nokia have never suggested that anything other than Symbian would be their core smartphone OS.

I would be very, very, very wary about buying a high end Nokia after the N97 fiasco. They basically realised it was badly designed, realised they couldnt fix it but didn't care even though most of the companies loyal high end device customers had snapped it up at launch.

Every single phone I have owned since 2000 was a Nokia. Every time a new high end Nokia came out, I was at the front of the queue. I've had them all - 6130, 7110, 8210, 6210, 6510, 7650, N70, N73, N95 8Gb and N97.

I've had the N97 6 months now.

My HTC Desire is on order.

I bought an N97 based on how much I loved my N95. The N95 is a much better phone.

I did the same as you're about to do, I sold my N97 after about 7 months and got myself a Desire, the difference is amazing.

No more memory issues when browsing, woop:D

Definitely. It's probably in my top 3 Nokia handsets ever, along with the 8210 and E71.

Nokia's CEO acknowledged that the N97 was a stinker. I don't think that the N8 will be anywhere near as bad.

But it's a Nokia. :(

Seriously though they always seem to show promise but never deliver, at least on their high end phones.

Why the 12mp camera? another gimmick to draw in the crowd. A consumer level camera does not really need any more than 5-8mp, especially phones with their smaller sensors. People need to start realising PQ and noise are far more important than MP!... :(

Exactly my story, my N95 8Gb was a fantastic handset.

My wife has a N95 8GB, she won't part with the thing, she has had it over 2 years and nothing that is available at the moment will tempt her away.

My E71 is going strong after 16 months and I cannot see me upgrading to another Nokia for the time being but this N8 looks interesting.

What is the difference between the N95 and the N95 8GB (other than storage...)? I looked into getting the N95 when I got my SE K850 and it was rubbish, however everyone seems to rave on about the 8GB.

The 1/1.83 sensor on the N8 is actually pretty large - even compared to consumer cameras.

The 8GB variant smoothed out some design issues, had a larger battery, a larger screen, more RAM and 8GB onboard storage.

The N95 itself did itself improve significantly over its life thanks to several big firmware upgrades - battery life, gps and memory management being the primary improvements.
