i am wondering what is involved it installing a sdd? i would just want to put my windows and a few other programs on there. Would i need a new version of windows 7 to install on there or can i just transfer it? might be a stupid question
also when connecting it to the motherboard and case what would i need to do? would i replace 6 gb/s connector from my hard disk to the sdd?

i have the GIGABTYE GA-Z77-D3H motherboard and a 1.5 tb hard disk
cheers andy

i have the gt myself

the intel has a longer warranty though but either is a decent drive

how big is your current windows install? if its larger than 60gb then a fresh install is needed

thought about the 128gb drives? double the space for not much more money

just unplugg all your hdd's attach the ssd to the intel sata3 port, set to ahci in the bios, install windows, once done install the intel rapid storage drivers off the motherboards website, then attach all your hdd's again and set the ssd as first boot device in the bios

all you need is a sata power connector(from psu) and a sata cable for the ssd

the windows folder is 18gb, not really thought about the size. okay some of that goes over my head sorry think i understand most of it. install windows does that mean i have to buy a new version?

do you have the original disk and seriel code for windows? its usually stuck to the side of the pc if its a readybuilt pc from a shop

you can clone your current hdd to the ssd if its less that 60gb (windows i mean)

yeah i have the disk and product key they sent by windows you mean the windows folder on the c drive?

you cant do it like that though it has to be the whole c drive

you can leave your install on your hdd and simply do another install on your ssd

aslong as your not booting the two installs at the same time no ones the wiser(microsoft)

By windows in this context he means every file and folder that is on your current boot drive. If you go into 'my computer' (just called 'computer' on windows vista and 7) you will see your 'c: drive' listed. It should show you how many GB you are using, and how many are free etc. The size of the current windows installation is the same as how many GB you are using.

okay so my hdd has 136gb used space, which is far too big for a 64gb ssd even if i uninstalled games etc. so what you are saying is that i can use the disk they provided to install windows on the ssd also as my hdd was unplugged when i did it. then basically i would have two windows boot files and i would have to ensure that the sdd was the primary boot.

Yes exactly. We are saying you can do a 'fresh install' on the SSD using the disk and product code that came with the computer. You could boot from either disk, just set your preference in the bios

okay so say i installed a fresh install on a 60gb ssd and set that as my primary boot device. If i installed a game that was say 10gb, i wouldn't have space on my ssd where would i install that to? might be a stupid question

or

say i still have the games and program installed on my hdd would i still be able to use them if i has booted from the ssd

its not too big for a 256gb ssd;) or delete/back up a few programs/games and try and get it down to 110gb for a 128gb ssd and clone it with macrium reflect?

regarding games from the hdd, some will work and some will need re installing

okay makes sense, but say i wanted to delete pretty much all my programs and install windows 7 on the ssd. then i could just install programs and games to my hdd couldn't i? and just have windows and the start up programs on the ssd? unless i have got myself confused.

yes you can delete what you want off your old hdd

whenever you install anything program/game ect it will ask where you want to install usually the ssd, just choose custom then create a folder on the hdd(instead of the ssd) and point the installer to that, the game/program will install to the hdd and place a shortcut on the desktop

okay sweet i understand, figured why my c drive was so large i had 70gb on music on there so i have put that on my 2tb external drive so the c drive is down to under 60 gb

if i were you id choose a 128gb ssd,i have a 60gb with 14gb free, its manageable but if i had to buy again id choose a 128/256gb its just better

you can clone your current hdd with macrium reflect it would save you a lot of hassle

the larger the ssd the slightly faster speeds aswell

yeah the non pro 840 would be good, esp for that price, its not as good as the pro version but tbh you wont notice
