North Face jackets, thoughts?

If you get the Evolution Parka it still has the tri-climate zips (doesn't come with anything inside though) and it's cut longer and less box like than the other jackets.

Hmn is that the one that looked a bit Liam Gallagher? :p The normal Evo was about the right length actually. If anything I'd like slightly shorter and smaller. I'm not what you'd call chunky! :p

The only people who buy functional items items based on their current 'coolness' are those who want affirmation and circle jerks from their like-minded folk and are buying for anything BUT function.

The rest of us, in the real world, buy functional items on their ability to function as desired and last while doing so. Fashion rating has no place in a thread such as this, nobody cares.

Its worth checking out TK Maxx, sometimes they have North Face jackets reduced. More often than not you will get poorer quality jackets, but every now and again I have seen a North Face, Mountain Hardwear or Berghaus

My mum found her Killy jacket in there, no idea how as Killy are usually very expensive

Rab
Mountain Equipment
Mammut
Haglofs
Jack Wolfskin
Berghaus

Anything but ruddy North 'chav' Face. I would rather spend £200 on a leather jacket than a flimsy piece of plastic bag.

Which is why they are a long way away from being cool. They have gone too mainstream. Like you say, there are all sorts of people wearing it thinking they are 'cool', when they are anything but. The fact that the quality is crap and the brand has been produced by a guy living in Cheltenham just adds to the fact. I reckon most people buying it are thinking they are buying into some cool clothing from Japan.

Far play to Julian Dunkerton he must be rolling in it.

Couldn't agree more.

This.

I think jack wolf skin and berghaus are two of the top brands in outdoor clothing ATM.

they're the cool jackets atm ? so i guess that makes my northface un-cool..

pretty cool then, i'll keep wearing mine as i wouldnt want to be seen as being cool.. even though i think most people think its cool to be un-cool..

You ****ed my mind harder than Jimmy ****ed.... Nvm

I'm not saying they're cool, I'm saying they're, IMO the best in terms of price/functionality at the moment. That is of course, merely an opinion

i couldnt comment on price, but functionality, i dont agree..

how could a jacket do any better at keeping you dry than my northface jacket can?

it couldnt, it can only be the same or worse..

I've even filled my hood up with water before just to see how good it was and it held the water there as if it was a golf fish bowl..

most do a good job, so op can pick which everyone he likes.. i only picked northface because i liked the look.. not because i seen a charv walking down the street wearing one though i have to say i've never seen a charv wearing one before, just hikers..

I tried a variety of jackets before finally picking, berghauses were lighter than all the north faces I tried, noticeably so, for 3 in 1 coats and even just a waterproof outer layer. The north faces that matched the berghauses for weight were around £70 more.

As for jack wolf skin, they have texa pore fabrics which is like wrapping a plastic bag around you but is incredibly waterproof and breathable. It's not quite as waterproof as gore tex but is much more breathable. is

I have a NF jacket (think it's the tri-climate jobby). Does the trick warm and rain proof. Bought purely for functionality. One thing I have noticed since buying it is the number of others on the streets wearing NF stuff. These people tend to be a broad spectrum of society but mostly older 30-50 at least from what I've seen around here.

I haven't noticed any mention of Patagonia. I used to work for a very exclusive ski tour operator. All the resort staff (ski guides etc.) were issued with company branded Patagonia garments. I managed to blag myself one for the winter one year and loved it but had to eventually return it. Quality gear and you won't find chavs, random people on streets wearing it. I Probably will get myself one soonish.

i love my NF parka.

not cheap but well made and keeps me warm walking the dog and camping etc. not too hot when its warmer too, so you dont feel like you are melting when you go into a warm shop etc.

It's all about breath ability as well, and Hyvent is awful at it. Saying that I'd probably sweat to death in goretex as well. Especially on the tube.

I was only thinking this morning about getting a new jacket after I saw someone with one of those absolutely awful Helly Hansen jackets (white with yellow/blue stripe) that were really popular over here - look terrible now and because so many people had them they became a bit of a standing joke.

I'm not a big fan of Super Dry as again they are really everywhere you look. I'm quite tempted with Berghaus - some nice jackets for around the £70 mark which is good.
