North Face jackets, thoughts?

I had a triclimate (I think it was a triclimate) After about a year the outer shell wasn't as waterproof and the fleece was never really warm anyway so sold both.

I now have a resolve shell that is made out of different material and is 100% waterproof - Ive had it since 2007 and it has never once leaked, even in the many torrential rains we had not long back

I also have a Genesis fleece because the outershell, it only a shell -

Combine both and you have a win win situation, not too hot to wear in the city, to work etc but still very warm for winter sports. This combo with a thin goretex base layer and 'buff' neck scalf have been from -25c in Canada to trekking in Thailand (shell) to sitting in my house now (just fleece)

lol at the idiots that say they are "not cool" - Its a black coat I wear with a small logo on it! It keeps me warm, dry but not too baking when exercising.

The only thing that is a bit annoying when skiing, sometimes snow gets between the shell and fleece because the shell is not zip in compatible (however tucking skin layer into back of trousers sorts that)

I have thought about getting a coat like a McMurdo (similar to the one above) but it will be way too warm for UK weather. Maybe if I lived in Canada or the Arctic

Another point - If you are going to buy, dont do it online! Go into a North Face store if possible or a re-seller and try it on first. Some, like the McMurdo are huge, even the small size and there are LOTS of fakes online

I got a Triclimate and it's brilliant, ain't no rain getting on me. I balance out how 'uncool' it is by wearing dope trainers. Were I to wear a cool coat as well, the Earth would stop spinning in awe.

You don't buy NF gear to make a statement or because its fashionable/cool. They are simply (if somewhat expensive) very well made, practical and do the job. When we do have extremes of weather you can sit feeling smug in the comfort of your superior performance clothing laughing at the idiots in their "cool" clothing soaked and frozen to the bone.

What about a good winter weight leather jacket?
I have a Belstaff panther with a removable lining for when it gets really cold and I love it.
It is not massive or bulky, has belt to keep you extra snug, the leather is waterproof and I never see anyone else with one!

hello my fellow member of the belstaff master race :)

You certainly dont see other people wearing them about town!

TNF gear is outdoor wear for people who don't actually do anything outdoors. 90% of their range is fashion orientated, but for the price you can't beat it. It's odd that someone thought the resolve was more waterproof than the tri-climate, as both use exactly the same waterproofing. Perhaps the DWR coating had worn off? The main problem with TNF stuff though is the majority of it has a very square fit, which doesn't suit me at all.

The remaining 10% is for people who do go on outdoor adventures, like the summit series jackets which are excellent. They have outdoor wear for pretty much anything, fashion, walking the dog, skiing, climbing Everest etc. I'm not a massive fan boy by any means but I think they do make good stuff.

Plenty of Berghaus and North Face up here, but we need it.

Got mine free from work, not warm as it's just a water/windproof jacket, but it does the job well and looks good.

Many angry people in this thread ;)

Make you look like a **** imo. Although it's not as bad as those bell ends who wear fight apparel when they've never even been in a fight let alone trained some form of martial arts. /mini-rant

People who wear clothes that are associated with a sport they follow are bell ends? Is it only mma or do people have to play a particular sport if they wish to wear clothing associated with? Bit of a strange rant there fella.

Edit: can nearly spell.

I have used North face coats for skiing which have served me very well for the past 7 odd years. The rest of the time its worn pretty much daily

Not sure how a plain black coat is fashion oriented!? Maybe the logo, but only because rich 'chavs' buy out gear that's just expensive - I remember a craze of people wearing Berghaus and North Face years ago at school when I was about 14.

Never had one then because I didnt start skiing until a few years later

I have a North Face fleece coat combo thing.
I could give less ***** what people think when they see me in what is essentially a black coat

It's brilliantly made and the warmest coat I have ever owned.
I could care less what brand it has on it.

This.

I also have some North Face Baltoro 200 boots which I got 7 years ago. They were quite expensive but worth every penny.

The grip is amazing for snow / ice, waterproof, keep your feet toasty and very comfy. I have used them at festivals, getting to and from work in the heavy snow a couple of years ago, in Canada, paintballing, hiking and generally cold wet conditions. Highly recommended. Mine are similar to these but 200 Primaloft insulation and black

Holy derailed thread batman!

In general north face stuff is quite well put together, but they are more of a fashion brand these day oppose to having proper cuts for specific activities.

If you just want it to walk about in and keep warm it will be fine, if you want to use it properly go with another brand.

I tend to stick with mountain equipment these days as the cuts fit me will, and the quality is top notch.

Well I had a browse today. Didn't really find much else that grabbed my attention, unless I looked at £250+. The NF Evolution is nice but I wish it was cut slightly smaller. That said I doubt any of them would be so you can fit plenty of layers underneath. I think I'll be ordering one tomorrow so I can get it in brown :)
