Notting Hill Carnival

Missed it for the first time in about a decade this year due to Family obligations. Absolutely love it, one of highlights of the year for me and my friends, great atmosphere, some quality soundsystems, lots of happy, friendly outgoing people (who drastically outnumber the shady types) and most importantly some of the greatest Jerk Chicken ever.

Sounds exactly the kind of thing GD would hate, bar the Jerk Chicken, everyone loves Jerk Chicken right ?

Halal? Or chlorinated? I prefer my own home bred ones, I know how they are cared for, fed and slaughtered...

Steady on, that sounds far too positive!

I do intend on going to it one year as the people who I know have gone always have a fun time.

It's consistently great fun, I remember one year (mid 2000's) it felt a bit sketchy at times but every other time has been safe as houses, no doubt shady stuff happens every year but myself and my mates have never experienced it. If literally everyone was getting mugged no one would go... the chances are overwhelmingly stacked in favour of carnival goers not experiencing any trouble. As is often the case a lot of the people who go on about how terrible it is are people who have never actually been, it's a bit like when people who don't live in London manage to convince themselves that the average London citizen is living in constant fear of being stabbed even though statistically the chances of being stabbed are ridiculously slim.

Other than the last sentence the post contained facts with the key information that you have to be quite unlucky to come across anything bad. If that sounds too positive for you then that is your problem.

Seems like you and some others in this thread have a weird aversion to people enjoying themselves. Fortunately outside of this forum you are in the minority. Happy to see some supporting it though.

The Sunday is nowhere near as bad as the Monday. Sunday tends to be for the kids and families with Monday being the more adult date where most of the trouble happens.

Why would it stop it ?

People get beaten up at football matches every weekend and yet lots of families still attend. Glastonbury is full of drugs yet lots of families still attend.

Not everyone lives in constant fear believe it or not, all it takes is one look at statistics and a level head to see the overwhelming majority of people are highly unlikely to experience any sketchiness.

No they don't. It's one of the safest sporting event to attend. I go watch rugby and cricket several times a year and can drink my body weight in cider, free from any control other than a thumbs up from the stewards or an attempt to grab the beer cup snake.

When I go to football even, a whiff of booze and people are prevented from entering the stadium. All the pubs nearby are heavily policed with literally any raised voices being arrested for public order to prevent problems later on. Christ, you can barely stand up in your seat without getting torn off a strip by stewards.

I'm from London and have been many times (maybe 13/14 times?).

There's always been a bad vibe IMHO and every time I get dragged over I always think 'not again'.

I've never once been and not seen some kind of trouble from fights to gangs steaming through 50+ strong and robbing people or just fighting each other. I also call BS on the arrest numbers when people compare it to a festival - it's why I asked what are reported crimes vs arrests because I see so much that the police just can't get to because they are stretched too thin or 'don't want to incite a riot'.

NHC is a thumbs down for me.

Im not arguing football is a dangerous sport to attend, it's not, statistically chances are nothing bad will happen to the vast majority of spectators.... just like Notting Hill carnival.

Violence can and does kick off outside football matches every single week and yet the vast majority of people won't ever experience it.... just like Notting Hill carnival.

Do you actually believe that people are prevented from entering the stadium if they smell even slightly of booze ? How often do you go to football matches ? I'm guessing not very often. Do you think they smell every single person coming in ? They may not let in people who are literally off their face and can't walk properly but if you've never smelt a pisshead at a football match then you've lived a remarkable life.

Also what has policing got to do with anything ? Notting Hill is still heavily policed and trouble still occurs. Do you actually think that nothing bad ever happens simply because there are some police active in the area ?

You've never been to a football match have you? I go once every 2 months. Tickeholders are routinely refused entrance if the steward can smell alcohol, logic being if it's enough to smell You're a risk of being drunk. Last time was literally right in front of me. The guy didn't even argue it as if he kicked off and was nicked he would get a lifetime banning order.

And no fights do not regularly happen, inside or out, and have not for many years. Football risk groups now comprise of a few chants or shouts as they are escorted to and from the ground on Derby days

I'm not the one who equated football to the NHC, they're not really comparable. How can they be when it's completely different types of events.

Offences ay NHC are sky high compared to literally every other national event in the country, if it wasn't it wouldn't require 12.5k officers to police it. That's the equivilant of 10 county police forces or what was needed to police the London Olympics nationally against severe terror risk.
