Now what?

To be fair, it's actually working incredibly well in a VM and as far as I know, I've had no real problems with it. The experience is not a bad one.

I'm now looking to find a second hand Intel C2D Mini for around the £400 mark - I'd like the 2GHz version but I think I'll struggle to get one for that price.

I ran it in VMWare as well for a while, but even if it runs properly it isn't the same as running it on certified Apple hardware and it's nowhere near as cool! :p

You can got to the Apple store and get an Educational discount (just make up a school!). This way you can get a new C2D Mini with Leopard and a Warrany. The price are good:

Mac Mini:
1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
80GB hard drive1
Ready to ship: 3 days
Free Shipping
£374.83
(£319.00 ex VAT)

or

Mac Mini:Superdrive
2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB memory
120GB hard drive1
Ready to ship: 24hrs
Free Shipping
£468.83
(£399.00 ex VAT)

Ask EVH to show you how to get more discount by "pretending" to be a Uni student!

You don't need to go second hand!

Let me just say 2GB of RAM is very much needed.

Especially in a Mini because of the shared graphics memory.

Funny if you ended up like most of us, Look at the base macbook, Then stretch to the top end macbook, then think it's not that much more for the MacBook Pro, then woah and behold you have a top of the range 17" MacBook Pro sitting on your lap haha!

My MacBook is fine with 1GB of RAM so I assume the Mini would be too. Unless you plan on running Photoshop, Dreamweaver or some other big app. I'll upgrade to 2GB when my I get Aperture in the new year.

The base 1GB should do Feek just fine...

It did seem as if it was posted to get a reaction from people who own macs.?

I don't think that at all! I don't think the almighty Feek is like that. I think he is genuinely asking what he can do on the OS.

So lets give him some help, he'e already displayed a keen interest in buying one!

My mates 1GB macbook crawls all the time if you open itunes and have coverflow going, the OS doesnt seem as snappy either. Get 2GB for yours dude, £52 from here and it'll be the best upgrade you have ever had!

I had 1GB in the powermac from 2GB as i sold a GB and didn't think it was too bad. Bought another GB again and WOW! 2GB makes the whole OS faster. Now up to 4GB and its a flyer, loads a very large amount of the kernel into the RAM and it flies!

Josh

EDIT- Good luck running aperture on it! ;) I have it on my MacBook Pro and its appallingly slow!

My MacBook is nice and fast with 1GB of RAM and is even faster now it is running Leopard in 64bit!

Aperture will be fine as it runs OK on my brothers Core 2 MacBook just fine and I have a C2D.

/me adds 1GB RAM to Xmas list :D

I'd only buy a Mini with a gig, but break it open to upgrade to 2Gb as it's cheaper that way and I'm not scared to use wallpaper scrapers.

How could I get discount, not being a student?

Two options:

1: You go online and click where it says "Apple Store for Education" enter a School name, order your Mini and Bobs your uncle!

2: You phone the Further Education store up and blag that you are at Uni. This will get you a bigger discount but you will need EVH's advice on how to do this...

Do you have to crack the case on a Mini to do the RAM? Does it not have an easier option like the MacBook?

My Dad did that when he had a mini, he got 2GB on the cheap and opened it up and then realised he had no warranty on it anymore. Shame that.

I've been egging my mate on to get the 2GB kit for his, it made my G5 run so much faster, it was like a different computer!

Hope you enjoy the RAM when you get it, best £35 i have ever spent on a computer!

Seeing as it's the legendary Feek I say we give him some slack ;)

At the end of the day he's the second person on here who's been swayed to buying a Mac from running the OS on a PC first. A good trade off I'm sure you'd agree.

Feek it is illegal to modify OS X to run on a PC and by doing this you are breaking the law.

However. Everyone giving you crap for it is probably guilty of breaking the same law which says its illegal to download music or play a non purchased game or even more cheeky, a downloaded or copy of windows or even better leopard.

I completely agree with you though. You want to try a product that to play is only available on the hardware which to a pre converter is up to and over 1k and at the end of the day it wont function very well under a PC spec so will force you to end using it or purchase the Mac environment anyway

Depends, if it is OS X 10.5 Server then it is no longer illegal.

What's the score with buying internationally? Could I buy from the USA and take advantage of the rather excellent exchange rate at the moment?
