Nvidia 30xx and vr.

My problem is there only 3 display ports. the two HDMI are useless I think unless i run 60 hz on my 144 hz surround monitors. I dont beleive my Benq27 inch 144 hz surround set up has old like 1.4 hdmi or lower I bought about 4 years ago.
Was looking at a 3090 for my Index and for new HP v2 headset. Means ill have to keep swapping out the third display port from one of my monitors.

I am feeling that I shouldn't spend the cash on a 3080, instead look at a 3070.

I have a 1080 now, and used to use it to run my OG Vive. Since I had limited space in my previous room, that got put in a box for a good while. I'll take it back out again, but think maybe a 3070 is going to be more than enough for that. Otherwise, I will use it to drive my 144ghz 1440p G-sync monitor. The 1080 is already 'okay' since I am not playing anything massively demanding right now, but more steady frames in Apex would be nice (although.. that might be down to my CPU.. decisions decisions).

Anyway.. a 3070 for an OG Vive. Thoughts?

3070 would be all over the og vive surely.

When the vive came out we were on the 900 series cards so three gens on now

This is what I'm hoping. I haven't tried Half Life yet, with all the bells and whistles.. not sure how much power is needed. I'm hoping that future titles are also going to push things, fingers crossed a 3070 can do the job for the 'lower res' panel of the OG Vive.

Considering it's allegedly on par with a 2080ti, you won't have too many worries. Half-Life isn't a demanding game. The only games that push a 2080ti over the top are the un optimized heavy sims like DCS, Trucksim, and ACC if you try push them over the top with high graphics and ss.

The 3070 perhaps could be quite good for VR, with it being the lowest tier card that offers up a very good VR experience.

Cheers, that's good to know, I've been really out of the loop for the last few years.

What is the rest of the system like?

I think it’s safe to say that the 3070 will be more than enough for the vive for most things. 3080 is looking like a very impressive card and would be the one I personally go for as I’ll be driving a reverb G2 with it... are you planning on sticking with the vive for the foreseeable?

I think it is also worth waiting just to see if we get some Big Navi news, they will almost certainly have competition in the 3070 range and maybe the 3080 range too.

I’m personally pretty much assuming AMD will have cards that can challenge Nvidia this time around, the writing is on the wall with what we know from RDNA2 in the Xbox. I think that unless you are in a rush for a new GPU it’s well worth a wait and see approach whatever brand you end up going for, as there’s a good chance that if AMD come out and give Nvidia a run for their money then Nvidia will either cut prices or release further SKUs like the rumoured 3070Ti etc.

The only thing that really has the potential to draw me towards Nvidia is the addition of DLSS to VR in unreal 4 (and undoubtedly will come to other engines too). The tech is a potential game changer in terms of being able to drive high resolution, high refresh headsets without sacrificing graphics settings until perhaps foveated rendering and eye tracking become ubiquitous. The million dollar question is whether a significant enough number of games will start to support it and whether AMD will have some sort of equivalent.

Either way my personal approach is a wait and see one.

I've got a 4790k running at 4.4Ghz, so I think at least for VR games thats fine.

It would really be nice to upgrade this headset, but I think that the depth and quality of VR games is still somewhat lacking. Doesn't make sense to drop even more cash into something I only use infrequently.

I use my rift s for a few a hours a night usually sim racing. If it wasn't for sim racing then I would probably stick with the rift s and 1080ti.

Depends what genres you are into really.

I think if the plan is to stick with the Vive then go for 3070 or the AMD equivalent. As mentioned if you aren't in a rush I think waiting a month to see where everything is at once the dust has settled is no bad idea (the 3070 isn't launching until October anyway afterall!), but if not the 3070 looks to be a pretty solid card from what we've seen... of course as you would expect Nvidia will have shown it in the best light so worth waiting for proper reviews and benchmarks perhaps before rushing to buy.

I use my original Vive along with a 1080ti and I've never had a problem with it. Once the initial bugs were worked out after release I can't say I've had any problems with it since. Moving up to a 3070/3080 would just be even better.

Yeah a lot are, but if you look closely at overclockers pictures you can see some models (usually the more expensive) have two. But they both useless to me as i would need to change one of my monitors so I could run 2 under DP, one HDMi and the other DP for VR.
I would imagine mine is a common problem many who run VR have triples especially in the Sim racing community who have jumped on board the VR train coming from triples.

Definitely upgrading to at least a 3080, though I'm giving serious thought to a 3090.

My current 6700k/32gb ram with a 1080 is really starting to feel the pain with the likes of Half Life:Alyx and Saints and Sinners.

I will be upgrading the 1080 first, then upgrade to Zen 3 when it drops for the extra cores and Pci-e 4 support.

We are going to sell off our 3 month old 2070 super when the 3080 is available. Madness? Probably, but we weren’t looking at VR when we bought the 2070S, which still seems to be worth around £400 used at the moment, though I’m sure that’ll come down.

I'm still flaberghasted at which VR games are going to be pushing a 3090.

VR games simply aren't that demanding or complex outside of a handful of games and most have some good optimisation settings.

It's less about the games pushing it and more about the headset resolution. It's a non issue if you are running an Occulus but the Reverbs are just such a high resolution that I expect even a 3080/90 will struggle to run at high settings, especially in racing sims, and at >90fps.

Maybe for sims but other than that, does the Reverb really require a 3090?
I think we can get benchmarks now on the Reverb V1 and I'm pretty sure it doesn't chug too badly on a 2080ti or 2080. Maybe I'm wrong.

I run an Index at 120hz on a 2080 for most games with jacked up super sampling and I encounter very few problems with framerates.

Some sim games do seem to be an exception to the rule, but for general VR.. the games just aren't that complex (sadly).
