NVIDIA 4000 Series

Anyone had issues with latest nvidia drivers? I installed latest today and I got a permanent black screen, hard reset and ok so far. Did a search and seems like it’s an issue with the recent driver from nvidia.

I cannot remember the exact turn of events, whether its was from updating the drivers or exiting a game etc. But yes I did have a blank screen moment recently, which was very unusual as windows hadn't crashed, and my PC is pretty stable.

Recovery involved turning my monitor off and back on. And there was desktop like nothing had happened.

No probs here.

What version?

After the early December driver, my 4090 started black-screening during games. Stalker 2 mostly, so I blamed the game. I was busy so wasn't gaming much, but then it was happening during Dead Space Remake as well. The screen would black out, but I could hear the audio, and still move and shoot. It wouldn't respond to ctrl+shift+windows+b to bounce the driver, only a hard reset would work.

I thought 572.16 at end of Jan was better, and then 572.42 a few days ago seems to have resolved a lot of it. I also downloaded gpu tweak 3 and dropped power to 80% and took 150 and 300 off core and memory while I was at it, it took my unigine superposition score down by about 2.5% so I'll leave it at that. Temps are much better.

I'm blaming the drivers though, maybe stalker might have been unstable, but DSR hasn't been touched or updated in years. Was worried the 4090 was dying a death.

TLDR: latest drivers seem to have improved it, but dialled-down the 4090 JIC.

I've had the same problem with the last two Nvidia drivers (4080). Have seen quite a few people on Reddit with same problem also.

Rather than start a new thread, I though I'd ask here. Was there a point in time after launch that you could just buy a 4090FE or a 3rd party one at MSRP? I appreciate the 40 and the 50 supply might be different, but it would would be good to know if there's a chance of them becoming available.

ty.

Yes I recall (after the Ada launch) after a few months the appetite dropped and people were able to pick up cards below the msrp because the exchange rate adjusted. So there were a good few months it was straight forward to buy IIRC. However this gen wont be the same but there will be a lot more demand for the 5090 for a while that's for sure. Are you asking as you want a 40 series card?

I think FE MSRP has always been the constant. I can only recall one instance where it had a mid generation price increase by a few % possibly around the Ukraine war time period. Although my memory isn't the best, I think that didn't effect the 4090, only the lower cards.

I had some weird issues before, like occasional blank screen or sometimes rarely windows not showing up past bios startup, but updating the bios and my motherboard chipset drivers have completely fixed the issues. It's worth looking into.
My motherboard for example has new bios updates being cranked out several times a month even a year after release, so it's clearly undergoing active software development with plenty of bugs etc being fixed.

Thank you. Just after some hope re: 5090 future availability.

Don't do it!

That's what the Corsair guy said on Reddit, he said he cringes everytime he sees someone unplugging their connector to check for damage, because in his own words, this connector is garbage and people shouldn't be unplugging them randomly as it's more likely to cause trouble

My view is that given the cable is only £20, if I ever disconnect mine, then I'm just going to buy a new cable beforehand and bin the disconnected cable each time.

It is what it is.

I think they've pulled the latest driver from the server? I tried downloading the latest from the Nvidia site to update my son's PC but when I click the link I get the "something went wrong" message and can't download it.

The link was for the game ready driver 572.42 and it was for a 1080Ti, Windows 10.

Edited to add - just downloaded 572.16 fine.
