NVIDIA 4000 Series

Sad truth is unfortunately there is no competition atm, AMD have too smaller market share and seem perfectly happy to align with Nvidia pricing. If AMD want me to switch they need to do better on price/perf like much better not 10 or 15% here and there.

It wouldn't matter if AMD did a card that was double everything of Nvidias at 20watts MOST would still buy NV! I feel this is why in part AMD don't bother/try as much as they probably could.

Quite right! I mean I usually buy AMD when they are near enough on performance but were 20% cheaper. In fact many a generation AMD were not close so they had to be cheaper and only the enthusiast community through tweaking and pushing the card made it closer in performance.

The problem with AMD now is if they are very close but charging more than nvidia, I wont be buying. Take for example the 6800XT commanding near £1000 where it was way overpriced, everyone in such a predicament chose the 3080 for that cards features and comfort.

Very true, AMD are overpriced. If they try it with next gen I'll buy Nvidia. I did that with the 1070, good card too, despite my preference for AMD they need to get pricing right.

I would be more likely to stick with nvidia due to a gsync monitor, but looking at them in isolation i would be happy with a card from either brand.

Did that happen? As in were they on sale at over £1000 at a time when the 3080 wasn't at that price or higher?

The prices were ridiculous, but for a long time availability was (somehow) a bigger issue. People (scalpers, miners, gamers - neither gpu brand cared who was buying) were paying the price, but the product simply wasn't available.

Keeping your competitors pricing in check is not a viable business model, that's how you go bust, if your products can't stand against the competitors by their own merits then don't bother because you cannot justify your R&D costs let alone production costs when all you're doing is undercutting your competitor just to keep your foot in the market.

Exit and move on....

Yes even the 6700's were pushing £900 for the AIB models. You have to remember the cards were not great at mining, and they were not great at ray tracing. So your next model up was the 6800 which was non existent, then the XT which was £1000 for long periods. Now when prices are like that, you cannot blame folk for sticking to mindshare and playing safe spending £1100 for a 3080 AIB.

We are not talking about FE drops which were spacious and a clusterfest of focus. This was cards that were in stock in between the FE drops. Now we know that if the UK had a reseller and were listing cards for MSRP drops you could pick up a 6800XT for its £600 but that was impossible as AMD had no UK reseller...

In fact, just to add to what i was saying. AMD did exit the market not so long ago, AMD really only made one "gaming GPU" the RX 480 / RX 580 and a few iterations of it, that was AMD pretty much not bothering.

They are now trying again and we had better hope it works for them because if not AMD have other markets to throw money at and actually get a return for their investment.

Yeah you are missing out the attempts though of the 5700XT which was a bit meh, and then the 5600XT which on release came out more expensive than the 5700XT which were on offers because they had been out for longer. That was the best they could muster to challenge the 2080/Ti or the 2070.

5700xt sapphire nitro+ I never came across the issues others reported maybe I was lucky I did like that you could play with clocks etc in the driver software instead of having to install afterburner worked well

Yeah, and they didn't do anything higher end than that did they?

The problem AMD have had in the last decade is they have been consistently loosing market share to Nvidia -No Matter What- Cheaper / better, cheaper and better, consistent market share loss.

One might say "why does that matter, so long as i get cheap GPU's, preferably from Nvidia"

If developing a high performance GPU with DLSS and RT and all the rest of it.... costs 1 Billion Dollars to develop and you're selling them for 20% less than your competitor still takes you from 25% market share to 20% market share next time your thinking this time i'm only spending half that on developing the product because i will lose money if i don't and pretty soon i'll not bother at all.

How low can AMD's market share go before there is nothing left in it for them? 15%, 10%, 5%? do we think AMD can recoup their development costs on 10% market share? is that enough to keep you with Nvidia 90% share revenue for R&D?

We all know the classic line of "if AMD put something out competitive I would buy it" and then they don't. This is why nvidia laugh, the chief reason people want AMD to be 'competitive' is so they can hopefully get a cheaper nvidia GPU. This is nonsensical and will only end up with the one brand if you never keep them on their toes.

Yes exactly.

We all want something for nothing but the reality is it costs AMD money to give us these things before they can hope to get it back from us and if the numbers don't add up it will only last so long, then Nvidia can charge what they like because AMD have had enough of losing money.
