NVIDIA 4000 Series

I am contemplating buying a 4090 gpu to get the most out of the VR
looking At what’s in stock the cheapest is the PNY and the Zotac, but boost clock for those are 2520mhz compared to some which are 2640mhz (for an extra 3-£400)
will the higher mhz make much of a difference, or could the PNY be o/c to match?
just not sure what my best bet is

All cards boost waaaay over their advertised max boost anyway - so it becomes a bit of a silicon lottery even without overclocking. My Trinity OC model has an advertised factory boost of 2535Mhz but out of the box sits at 2750Mhz with no overclocking. 2900 with a simple OC on the core. SOme undervolt to get 99% of performance with a decent reduction in power draw making the card more efficient and not burn so much leccy as it's become very expensive.

Warranty when spending this much on a card was my top priority. Zotac are the only manufacturer to offer 5 years but some people have had noisy fans from the Zotac. Mine was until I changed the layout in my case and inverted the card.

Only reason some will purchase the top top cards are benchers who want the best silicon to get the highest bench scores. There used to be a few quid between the cards. Now this is £100's between models. Pointless as a gamer - you maybe able to measure the difference - but never 'feel' it in game.

Yeah I regularly play racing sims, I love it, yet To try out Star Wars squadrons and DCS, though I have played msfs, it’s finding time to play
I have the fanatec CSL elite with next level racing cockpit and dual warthogs

sounds like a plan undervolting it, my leccy bill is stupid (£1200/month), the TT case allows me to change the orientation of the gpu so that might help with the zotac. Not that bothered about benchmarking, so long as the 4090 will improve the VR experience

Wintermute makes a good point the chips were in the hands of AIB so they can’t recut them to something lower.

Nvidia really shot themselves in the foot in the naming department with all this nonsense. So what price are they going to flog this for. The price brakcet they wanted is firmly occupied by AMD. Good luck trying to sell £700 4070ti (actually I don’t think they need it, it will probably sell). But it will look like terrible value next to the 3080.
I'm guessing £800 as this fits into Nvidias "layering" strategy, slightly more performance than a 3080 for a bit more money.

£1200 electric bill per month? I’d be buying a Steam Deck instead!

Wow, what are you doing to have a bill that high and have you considered solar panels?

What's the warranty situation with the FE cards? If I sourced a 4090 from an EU country, would I be able to get warranty support in the UK or would I have to go back via the EU retailer?

You cant buy the FE from the EU store if in the UK ... i would assume any EU orders would need to go back to the store in the EU you got it from :)

Was about to say if you have relatives abroad its pretty easy lol. I have family in Switzerland and i was so tempted but gonna wait for those price drops instead.

Yeah same. My 3080 is fine and all logic says to wait for better availability and price drops but I just want a new toy :D

Just HODL! Price drops are inevitable! Judging by how long these 4090 FE's have sat in stock for in the EU, they will want to shift them quicker so price drops will be the only way. You can only create so much FOMO before it dries out.
