That’s not how it will work. The US is a massive market so losses there cannot simply be diverted to the rest of the world. To make up for those loses they will raise prices elsewhere. They could even subsidise lower US MSRP by increasing MSRP everywhere else.
Isn't that dependent on supply and demand. If there's plenty of supply, raising prices in the US might mean a 20% drop in sales..who knows..but they'll still sell gpus, it wont just go to nothing.....if the 20% can't be sold then yes, they'll have to make up the loss by raising prices.
that's not the case though is it...from all the news there's going to be a shortage of gpus, so a 20% loss in the US will get absorbed by the rest of the world without any loss to nvidia....the only harm it will do is to the US consumer. also bare in mind they only pay 5% tax on purchase, so raising a tariff on the chip(not the full cost of the whole gpu) may just raise the price where it's more in line with what the rest of the world pay...if an enthusiast is willing to pay $3000 for an AIB 5090 where the fe is $2000, i think they'll be enough buyer is the tariff means they may be paying $2,300 lets say, like the rest of the world
if he keepsraising tariffs, multinationals may just move production/headquarters away from the US also..that way they can continue to manufacture good they sell around the world, the tariff on the chips might only be a small part of overall cost of a product(say a car for example), and if they move their headquarters then the US will loose tax revenue also...it does happen..plenty of companies in Geneva that left when Labour put corporation tax up...even when Tories dropped it again, they never came back.
the danger with tariffs. double edge sword that can backfire if you're not to careful. It's working for Trump at the mo due to his unpredicatability, and the fact the people are behind him..if prices start to rise quickly in US and infation rears it's head again, he'll loose his support. long way off from that happenning at mo...but interesting times
also, as pointed out TSMC are building 3 fab plants in the US, the 1st of which will come online soon...Once that happens they can produce locally without incurring tariffs(though think Apple got most of production atm)
