NVIDIA 5000 SERIES

Pretty excited to see the 5080 reviews, I think we’re collectively expecting it to be an even more lukewarm reception than the 5090… slim chance of a surprise, considering Nvidia’s own performance charts.

Some of the leaked details indicated it was 10% below the performance of a 4090 but I also found this:
In comparison, an RTX 4090 and the same CPU managed 365,013 points, and 337,319 points, respectively. That's a 23% and 18% difference, putting the RTX 5080 decidedly behind the 4090 in raw power

nah, people will have plenty of time to buy a card of their choice from a retailer of their choice, the retailers are all stocked up and as long as your happy parting with £2000 - £3000 for a 5090 I'm optimistic the early adopters will be able to place an order

Based on my experience with the 30 and 40 series release

I dont see why the 50 series should be any different, and this time a lot of people are happy with their current 40 series ten thousand dollar command centres,

And the cost of living crisis for many people, remember guys, paying your mortgage and food bills is more important than a graphics cards.

Finally someone has done cpu tests with the 5090 and the results validate me not getting this GPU unless I also get a new CPU

Video below but here is the summary, and all results are relative to the 9800X3D that all 5090 reviews were based on:

9800X3D: 100% (baseline performance)
7800x3D: up to 80%
5800x3D: up to 70%
5600x: up to 50%
3600x: up to 40%
1600x up to 30%

So what this mean in practice?

If you have a 7800X3D, your 5090 will run up to 20% slower than if you had a 9800x3d.

If you have a 5800x3d your 5090 runs 30% slower

If you have a 5600x, your 5090 runs 50% slower

If you have a 3600x, your 5090 will run 60% slower

And finally if you have a 1600x, the 5090 runs 70% slower

based on these, I'd suggest anyone who wants a 5090 shouldn't bother unless they have or plan to have a minimum of a 7800X3D

Anyone spending 2 grand on a GPU, should not be pairing it with a bargain basement CPU. Not really a big deal.

Actually it kinda is but it's no loss since the 5090 isn't great anyway

I don't want a 9800X3D because I like having 16 cores and I don't want to deal with having to use a 9950X3D as if it's a 8 core CPU. For me to maximise the 5090, I have to actually sacrifice CPU performance for other tasks

Apparently Igor's lab accidentally posted his RTX5080 review early; it was only up for a couple minutes before it got taken offline but apparently it showed the 5080's performance was way behind the 4090
What a surprise! Said no-one except some of the numpties in this thread who against all common sense believed the 5080 would trash the 4090.

Yep, I'll look at doing a whole new build in 2026, hopefully by then there are more attractive CPU options for next gen GPUs
I am doing a 9800x3D build now, just waiting on stock of the CPU and the new Gskill CL26 RAM. May as well considering Zen6 is also going to be AM5 until 2027.

I thought a 5080 would be faster than a 4090 very slightly but that was based on previous new gen history. Then Nvidia revealed the specifications and I realised they were giving us the lower tiers for 4080s prices.

The 5080 is a 5070Ti with a $200 price hike

The 5070Ti is really a 5070 with a $150 price hike.

The 5070 is a 5060Ti with a $150 price hike.

Yet we still have people praising Nvidia for “lowering prices”. It’s like watching an abuse victim say their abuser “loves them really”.
