But that would lead you down the route that it isn't a dual card hybrid jobbie?

Dual GPU would be very much this generation in my opinion.

GeForce 9800 will be a monster. Not that I think that this statement surprises you the least bit, but we were told by a friend that the next high-end GPU will not only sport double the performance of the ATi R680, but actually triple the performance. The card "R680" is suppose to have two RV670 chips side by side on a single PCB and be able to output around 1 TFLOPS. This is the next high-end card from AMD/ATI, but we should not forget about R700 which is due this Spring. G92 or whatever we should call it, is also slated for launch until Spring. When we first heard about the 3 TFLOPS it was too early for us to actually believe them, but it seems that NVIDIA is still telling its partners that 3 TFLOPS is what they will be getting.

I'm in roughly the same boat, was going to get a 8800GTX as part of my christmas upgrade. I really hope that the new card comes out before christmas as my current card is already promissed to someone so i'm going to need a new card by then anyway. I will be really ****** if i buy a 8800GTX only for the new card to come out a month or two later

And before anybody pawns me about my other statement about doubling of gfx power, from Toms Hardware page (I know not every rates it but where else can you find a comparison of a 6800 and 8800?) and new drivers have probably increased the gap as well.

So why shouldn't the trend for each new generation be double the old one?

And for the record Moores law was a doubling of power every year not every two years.

3 Teraflops. Truly a monster. If it's that powerful, I'm worried the thing will cost at least £700. Way to kill off there own company eek. It's almost like the first gen geforce cards blowing the market wide open if it's true.

From a dodgy source (Fudzilla) dated 27th Sept, but they say "sources" say:

"The D8E will be a GX2 like card with two PCBs and two chips and many power connectors. It will launch very early in Q1 which indicates January or February as a possible date"

If the 2 boards is true, then ain't worth the wait IMO, it means it will need SLi profiles ... you may as well have 2xGTX if thats your bag .. I was hoping for a single card solution.

Nvidia agrees that D8M and D8E are simply evolutionary steps as it shrinked its chips from 90 to 65 nanometre but the real next generation will come next year probably in Q2 if not later.
This matches the Nvidia's financial conference call where one of the Vice presidents said that Nvidia will have at least two new high end product until the next analyst call. This one usually takes place once a year.
D8E is a dual PCB dual chip card while D9E is a new chip that we don't know much about. We know it will be much faster than G80 but that is about it.
