NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

The PS5 will be "very weak" in 1-2 years? Umm no, that is not realistic or logical.

Relatively, hardware wise to a good PC. Its always the way.

They had to bring out more powerful versions of the current consoles(Pro, one x) because their hardware became so outdated and they struggled to output anything more than 1080p!

Be reasonable instead of just applying binary logic baesed on previous generations that now doesn't make sense. The PS5 is so strong in this generation that it will not look "very weak" (you realise how strong that term is, right?) in only 1-2 years. That just isn't realistic.

I cant see any reason why these consoles won't be very weak hardware wise in comparison in a couple of years. It always happens.

2 years after launch we will have likely had the RTX4000 series out or even be approaching RTX 5000. We will also likely have Ryzen 5000 in 2022 and desktops will move to ddr5 ram.

Its just what happens . we will probably have a ps5 pro and xbox x series one x (or whatever it will be called :p) at some point.

The PS4 was weak on release. Somone posted a comparison and the GPU in the PS4 was as strong as a bottom spec AMD GPU that was released the same year as the PS4 was released.

That doesn't seem to be the case this time round. As someone has pointed out, on release the new consoles will be more powerful than a vast majority of gaming PCs (going by the steam survery). The GPUs in the consoles are between a 2070 and a 2080 and the CPU speaks for itself.

Unless we expect to see 2080 performance in budget builds this winter. These consoles may age better than the last ones.

Will they need a pro version in 5 or years. Depends on how much progress PC components make. but if the last 2 generations of GPUs are a predictor of future performance increase. They may age just fine.

The prices kept going up because they were accepted. Both companies are guilty of this.

It's like the logic of buying fifa 15 for €40,
Then 1 year later fifa 16 is better so you accept €45 as the price. And then €50,€55,€60.

This probably initially happened because mining kept the prices of a GPU series high and it never dropped before the next release so the next release was marked up.

You can try justify prices with inflation, cost increases etc. But you all have just been buying the same fifa for a price increase for the last 6/7 years. Because Nvidia/AMD got away with valuing their previous gen at its launch price when they launched their new cards.

Xbox One and PS4 were outdated compared to most gaming PC's before they were even released.

PS5 and XSX are much more powerful than the vast majority of current gaming PC's. The upcoming consoles are so far ahead of the average gaming PC that upgrading the average gaming PC just to match next gen consoles is uneconomical vs just buying a console.

Say you are on a 7700K and GTX 1080 which is probably an above average PC and you want to upgrade to a PC with console specs. You will need a new motherboard with pci-e gen 4.0, a new 8 core CPU, potentially a new NVME SSD, potentially new RAM, potentialy a new PSU and last but not least a new GPU with the equivilent power of a RTX 2080 super. That little lot will come in close to £1000. If you dont need the RAM, PSU and NVME then the price would still be about £700 just to equal a £500 console.

There is no way that these consoles will be considered weak in 2 years time. They will probably still be faster than the average gaming pc.

The economics of PC gaming are broken and until that is fixed console gaming will be king to everyone outside of the ultra enthusiast.

They won't. :p

The same stuff gets trotted out every generation (ie that the the new consoles are really powerful etc etc)
Do you have source inside AMD and Nvidia that are predicting huge triple digit performance increases in GPUs over the next 5 years? Care to share what they are telling you?

The only way the consoles won't age well, is if Nvidia and AMD pull their fingers out their ass and start delivering massive performance gains (We are talking >70% generation to generation). otherwise the consoles will be fine for at least 5 years, or they may even last till the ps6 and XSX2 are released.

This isn't true.

For example, the ps4 had 1.84tflops on release and just after, that same year, the 780ti was released with 5 tflops .

It looks like before the ps5 is even released, nvidia will release a ~20 tflop card (and thats a fairly conservative , non boosting number I believe based on leaked specs), doubling the PS5 tflop power.

The same thing is happening this gen as last gen.

It is odd to see a few people on hear argue against the reality of the situation

I think you're the only one not taking into account the changed landscape and massive strengthening of console specs here for this upcoming generation. It makes no logical sense to say the PS5 will be "very weak" in 1-2 years when the Nvidia 3XXX series will still be in its lifecycle. But anyway lets agree to disagree rather than waste time arguing over something that seems rather clear.

As I just posted nvidia will already have a card with about double the tflop power out around the new consoles release, similar to 2013.

I'm not. There is no changed landscape

The numbers are there for you to see that a very similar disparity will be present on release, just like in 2013.

Is it not a bit awkward comparing a $1000 part to a $600 (guess) system? Most people aren't buying Nvidia's BigEpeen 3000.

Price is a totally different factor and I agree consoles are better value.

I'm speaking from a pure tech/if you want the best perpesctive. In that respect the performance numbers we are seeing are very similar to 2013.

Its bizarre to see people trying to deny that very simple reality. A reality that has been the case for decades.

The PS5 will be "very weak" vs PC in 1-2 years? I doubt it, as that is not realistic or logical based on the reported specs. In 3-5 years yes, more likely that then it will start to show it's age without a console refresh.

The PS5 cpu will remain strong, so will it's SSD and Memory

the only thing that will get outdated quickly is it's GPU.

it's GPU is roughly equal to a rtx2070. In 2 years a 4080ti will be out which will be 3 to 4 times faster

The thing is the average gamer won't be buying the 780ti or the 2080/3080ti they will be buying the gtx1660 /rtx 3050.

The most common Gpu on steam is the gtx1060 which is a 4 year old card and going by this logic the most common card in 2 years time will be either the 1660 or 2060 which is still a long way off 2080 specs.

No, price is an important factor in this discussion, It doesn't matter how powerful the top spec graphics card is if it is too expensive for most people to purcahse, especially relative to the consoles.

The only way the consoles will age poorly is if we can get powerful GPUs at a reasonable price. Otherwise the majority of gaming PCs will be just as strong as a console.

This is a completely different argument though.

I agree the consoles offer better value, especially for the first few years of their release.

I'm just simply talking about the overall tech disparity (if you can afford it and want to stay ahead of the curve).

That is a completely different argument. I would agree with you on that. It now costs more to stay ahead of the curve. The tech/power disparity still exists though and it is roughly the same as it was in 2013 and will only grow larger and larger as the years go on.

As expected though we have now swerved away from my original point.

Will the new consoles be very weak in comparison to a top tier PC ~2 years after release? Yes, absolutely.

Does it cost more to buy into that extra performance now? Yes, absolutely.

I've just gone back and taken a look and price was always on the table of this discusssion, so i disagree this is still in line with the discussion.

But if you wish to pivot define what very weak is.
