NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

But being on 10 is demonstrably better for security than being on an old version with known exploits that is never going to be fixed. It doesn't matter if 10 is not in a good place, 7 is in a worse place. It's like you're saying - "I don't like that new bucket, the handle's uncomfortable, and some of the water spills out when I carry it, I'm going to stick with my old bucket", while the rest of us look on in awe as all the water flows out of the massive holes in the bottom of your old bucket.

As per my earlier link though - there are more concerning security issues than that, which are known to have been exploited, that have taken MS months or in the recent case 2 years to fix. It isn't really a hugely different situation until MS is achieving better on the Windows 10 front.

What are the expected timeframes around all this?

Nvidia - 1 Sep we have the "launch" of the new cards, presumably hitting shelves a few weeks later. So call that 1 October.
PS5 - we're looking at what, end of October / start of November, to drum up sufficient hype for Christmas. I would hazard RRP won't go over £500.
Xbox Series X - we're again looking at November and rumoured price of $600, so call that £600. Sounds steep to me btw.
AMD - Possibly coming November at a push?

So there's going to be a massive saturation of supply in the gaming market, all coming in Q4.

I just can't see Nvidia are going to be able to be too punchy on pricing unless they deliver something really, really special.
AMD confirmed that the GPUs will launch before the consoles at one of their earning calls earlier this year.

It doesn't have *any* updates, that's the point, it's unsupported, there are known vulnerabilities in it that will never get patched.

Even when it did receive patches, it was easy to delay or just not install - it didn't have telemetry or forced updates. I'd rather no telemetry than patches for security flaws on a gaming rig.

So if the peeps you are arguing with just have a gaming PC then I can see why sticking with W7 is attractive. It was the best Windows yet where the end user still felt in control.

Using Windows 7 given it is no longer getting any attention/security updates doesn't seem wise going forward. A case can be made for it but it's certainly not something I'd recommend or do. We'd better get some new cards soon and the performance jump needs to be major given the demands of MS FS 2020. A 2080ti is struggling at 4K Ultra and not maintaining 60+fps from what I've seen. Yes you can turn the settings down to high and it doesn't look much different but that defeats the point of spending so much on a GPU in the first place.

It's still fixed eventually, rather than never. I'm with you on "they should do better", but sticking with older versions isn't a fix for that.

I wouldn't, personally. And who has a machine they exclusively use for gaming and never do any browsing or other stuff on?

I'm writing all this from linux by the way, I'm no huge MS fan, I know they get a lot wrong. It's just that avoiding updates is not a good way to go.

Anyway, back to GPUs. Who's up for a QTX 3099 for £5k?
;)

I'm not saying people should - just saying that extolling Windows 10 security wise while berating people staying on 7 makes me laugh given the record 10 has on that front which is far from ideal by any means.

Guys, seriously, get the hint. If you want to talk about windows security, create a new thread elsewhere.
Yeah, lets get back to all the juicy fake news out there about Ampere where the 3080Ti/3090 will cost $1999 and therefore 3070 will be about $999 because you know, 2080Ti does cost $1200 :p:D

Be funny if Jensen did the release talk and was like it isn't Ampere, isn't the 3000 series and isn't on 7nm :D

Since there are a whole load of assumptions being banded about in this thread as to who is upgrading and why, can I ask what you find lacking in your current card that makes you want to upgrade?

For me, HDMI 2.1 hopefully and not having to OC the nuts off of my Zotac 2080Ti to get high FPS @4K/60 with all the bells and whistles.

Having recently discovered GSync if the new cards don’t have HDMI 2.1 I may just stick with what I have but my kids will be disappointed as they’re looking for a hand me down upgrade over their RX480.

Only have an RX480 and want to get a G2 VR headset so I need something powerful enough to run it nicely. Probably a 3070/3080 or AMD's mid-high offering if they have one. Will also be looking to switch to a zen3 cpu as well from my 1700X. Probably need a new PSU too, 750/850W up from my current 550W. And more ram. And a new mobo to take it all. Big upgrade for me so will be looking at it all together as a package.
