I don't think Samsung will be interested in making desktop CPUs. Be very careful what you wish for. If they did buy AMD, which I doubt they will, they might just scrap everything not related to mobile, low-power, wearables, etc.

The US patent system is a giant mess. Look at what Rambus were doing,and it got so bad the US government had to step in and invalidate some of their main patents!!

That's what id be wary of too. The desktop market is getting smaller with the move to smaller portable devices. A market that Samsung are big players in.

Agreed, there are users of both vendors who resort to some rather daft comments. See terms such as AMD crew, nvidiots, defence crews etc. Completely unnecessary and a bit immature.

Desktop gaming as a better alternative (1080P - 60 FPS - higher quality IQ) to Consoles is also becoming defunct.

£200 for a middle of the line CPU and £250 for a good 1080P GPU and then all the other components you need you're looking at £1000 for a good but nothing special 1080P gaming rig.

I do wonder if if Intel, Nvidia and AMD with their GPU prices these days are a cause of a declining Desktop market or are reacting to it.

Talk about a non issue. I actually owned a 256 GTS, don't recall ever having anything more than Samsung memory IC on a GPU, though.

From talking to any of my console owning friends, price is indeed a big factor in putting them off pc gaming. Particularly gpu costs. A decent cpu will last a good while for gaming. Sandybridge being a good example. But as games get ever more demanding the need for gpu horsepower increases along with the cost. Most also like the simplicity of consoles. They're not for me personally but I can see the attraction.

True and with DX12 around the corner much cheaper new CPU's will become much more viable.
I guess it is just the initial outlay, its not too expensive to keep it up-to-date once thats done, in a years time my GTX 970 would still be worth £150 which i will have to put toward its replacement.
Hopefully by them something much better will cost £250 again.

CPU, Motherboard, PSU, RAM, Case... will go on for 5 years if they are quality components.
