Nvidia doesn't want to just dominate the graphics card market, it wants to own it

Cause you spend all your money on graphics cards ?

Because I don't like being locked into an ecosystem which ultimately breeds inferior overpriced products.

I won't use crapple products either for the same reason.

@LambChop you could do yourself and NVidia a favour and buy an AMD card when the next gen of cards arrives. The alternative is to be locked into an ecosystem with little competition paying ridiculous prices for second rate products in a couple of years time.

If people really want to save NVidia (from themselves) and their wallets from taking a bashing, when the next gen arrives buy an AMD card.

I keep hearing about this eco system I'm being locked into..... no-one else has been able to explain it, maybe you could ?

For Lambchop

"In economics, vendor lock-in, also known as proprietary lock-in or customer lock-in, makes a customer dependent on a vendor for products and services, unable to use another vendor without substantial switching costs. Lock-in costs which create barriers to market entry may result in antitrust action against a monopoly."

That's what a proprietary eco system is, as defined by Wiki.

Nvidia do not allow anyone else access into their hardware/software and it is therefore proprietary. G-Sync is a very recent and good example. Whereas Freesync on the other hand could be adopted by Nvidia (Or anyone else) if they choose to.

:)

He does have a point though. If Nvidia keep heading the direction they are heading, we'll soon have 128-bit cards in the £250-£330 price bracket, and 256-bit cards in the £500 market :D

And? Gaming is a luxury not an necessity, life is too short too worry about the price of GPUs.

And AMD are not a charity. People shouldn't feel compelled to buy AMD just because they are poor.

When the next gen arrives I think it will be a level playing field again which will give users a good choice when vendor to go with.

But only time will tell.....

Pretty sure for people that are compelled to buy AMD cards "in general" are more because of they they feeling that they are getting more for what they are paying (i.e. 390 8GB vs 970 3.5GB), same as the reason why people are more compelled to buy 980Ti over Fury series.

Agreed guys, you should buy because it does what you need. I will buy AMD again if it delivers what I want and that is that. I won't buy because they are "the underdog" or "the little guy"

Then you had better prepare yourself for a completely controlled police state and expect prices to double.

Seriously, if people think Intel are extracting the urine with their Skylake K prices then you ain't seen nothing yet.

You can also bet your backside that technology on these GPUs will slow to a crawl, and none of this "New tech every year". They would just sit back and sell you the only choice, their choice.

Intel are a pretty nasty corporation but they pale in significance to the things Nvidia has pulled off over the years.

I understand what an eco system is, I just didnt know what Nvidia is supposed to have done that I am locked into.

FYI. Gsync is not a good example. I am not locked to Gsync. If I buy AMD tomorrow and play it on a Gsync monitor, I can play games just like I would be able to on a non Gsync monitor.- Vice versa for Freesync.

Again I ask, whay eco system of Nvidias am I locked into ?

Doesn't matter, people will still buy new GPU's regardless, I be willing to bet that the majority of people on these tech. forums upgrade every year, at least it certainly seems that way..... heck how many people went from the 970 to a 980 just because of the vram situation and they were happy to pay the extra £100+ pounds just to have proper 4GB of VRAM, as in a whole extra 512MB of VRAM.... of course the performance of the 980 is better than the 970 regardless of VRAM but unfortunately that wasn't the reason for most of those people moving.

You just need to look at the CPU market, no competition at all for intel so we have been getting small performance increases for how long now?? With stupidly high prices i.e. skylake.....

Completely unfounded rubbish that clearly has no basis in reality. Of course Nvidia will have to innovate otherwise they wont make any sales. Prices wont double at all, there are certain price points that they have to hit to maximize profit, Nvidia already do that regardless of AMD.

If you are going to assert that Intel prices is the result of AMD's failure then you will have to provide evidence why the well known difficulties of shrinking process node has basically ground to a halt and Moore's law broken. If Intel could get a7nm process out as quickly and cheap as their 18Um prices then they would be whipping out massively faster CPUs as we speak. Sam in the GFX world, we got stuck on 28nm forever, nothing to do with extorting customers. Quite the opposite, with the stagnant process Nvidia invested massively into creating a GPU twice as efficient on the same process node. Something which they can leverage for years to come in Pascal ans Volta.

Your naivety is breathtaking, any company will suck as much money as they can out of potential customers, if that company can sell the product 100x at $1000 or 300x at $100 they will go for the first option.

They are not your friend, you are a cash-cow.

Yes, but nothing indicates people are going to pay $1000 for a $100 product. As has been pointed out repeatedly, PC gaming isn't the only gaming, if Nvidia started trying to charge $1000 for a 950 then people wouldn't pay it, so its irrelevant. People don't upgrade for 4-5 gens of Intel as it is now, Intel can get away with that because the overall PC market is massive compared with GPU's. A market is self regulating and doesnt run purely on hyperbole.

People have a budget and will generally stick to that. If performance upgrade is poor, they will sit on what they have. Why am I still running a 3930K that is years old? Point proven in my case.
