A day with the SWIFT!
After much indecisiveness on my part and the Acer 4K being delayed, I decided to pick up the Asus ROG Swift. I spent much of last night and this morning testing it out and my thoughts so far focused around the propitiatory tech in this monitor.
System:
4770K @ 4.6ghz
8GB DDR3 2400MHZ C11
780 SLI 1110/1500 stock
OCZ Agility 3 256GB
G-Sync
Where to start with this? Its a game changer by a long long long way. The bulk of my testing was done around Crysis 3, as I know this game can hammer frame rates as well as give fluctuation swings of 30+fps depending on whats happening where. I had MSI-AB running to show me frame rates while playing. To start with in the training VR it was reporting a steady 85-95FPS, everything was silky smooth, if I didn't have the frame rate counter up I would swear it was hitting a sync cap at 144FPS.
Opening missions, with all the rain and explosions going off, this is where some of the biggest frame hits happen, I saw them as low as 42FPS, did I feel it get lower? Yes, but the feel in frame drop was nothing compared to what you'd see on a non-Gsync setup, while around 40-45fps in terms of fluidity and responsiveness it felt like the frame rates were 60fps+, I could only feel the hit as such due to the rapid drop from ~100fps to 40fps.
Settings used were set by GFE; Very high, 16x AF, 1xSMAA Low.
3DVision 2.0
The worlds first and only 1440p 3dVision capable monitor. The increased pixel density helps no end over standard 27" 1080 3dVision monitors, as we know 3DV doesn't support AA, so the increase gives a very sharp, very crisp 3D image, combined with Lightboost (not sure if its still being called this with ULMB being a certified feature now) makes for a brilliant 3D display.
I had read some reports of 3D being problematic, I've only tried a few games but from what I have tried its been faultless, the only exception being Assetto Corsa, for what ever reason the screen went nuts and the game crashed, I will have to look into this more.
ULMB
Haven't had many reasons to use this yet, but the little I have (BF3) it was a fantastic experience, image clarity while moving (MB reduction) is superb, the game almost feels weird with it on
Final Thoughts
This monitor from top to bottom is a premium bit of kit, but the price reflects this (unfortunately). BUT you get what you pay for, every last penny, I have absolutely no regrets at shelling out £700 for this. The stand and pivot setup for the monitor is well thought out, easy to adjust. The OSD is very very easy to use, setup and access. The monitor and drivers act very smartly together. Set 120hz, Gsync auto disables, ULMB auto enables, and vice-versa when you set to 144hz.
The only thing I would change about this monitor is the location of the USB ports, pain in the bum to access (Though you can easily just rotate the monitor
) and would prefer them on the base stand of the monitor, or at least an extension hub on the stand.
Price premiums or not, Nvidia and Asus have hit a massive home run with this monitor. I do hope freesync turns out to be even half as good as this, as its something every gamer needs to experience.
