Kaapstad,
have you tested any cards out at 3 x 1440p? (2m pixels more than 4k)
Im going to be replacing my 30" with a 27" IPS high hz monitor soon, so a lot of gaming will just be 1440p, but in theory, it will enable me to triple screen, which I will use in certain games that its nicer for.
Waiting on the release of these new cards to see whats what price wise, but basically choice is between 2 980ti's or 2 titan x's. Obviously cba with titans if I can get away with 980ti's VRAM. Dont care about AA much, dont really use it beyond 2x. its the first thing I turn off when FPS starts to dip.

For 1 or 2 cards @2160p 6gb is the better option as 99.9% of the time you will not be able to use anymore.

Here is a prediction (shock, horror) the first Pascal cards won't be much quicker than the GM200 cards as they will be small Pascal like the GTX 970/80 is small Maxwell.

I'm expecting that too. Considering all the posts I've read about 70-80% quicker cards I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when it first lands.

It'll be just like the 980 release and we'll all be waiting for the Titan variants which will be left as long as Nvidia can get away with, Look how long they held the full GK110 back for.

I still own original Titans, GTX 980s and 290Xs. For gaming @2160p out of the three the original Titans are best as the other two stutter and are less smooth.

We have learned through experience that overwhelming amounts of VRAM has a benefit vs the "just enough" approach as it reduces paging hitching, what always bothered me is why did NV or AMD never put out any info about this, it's still so mysterious and most people even now refuse to believe it.

Interesting, and I know this thread is about the 980ti, but I think your right about Pascal and the fact that we will get small GP?04 first.
As to how good it will be, well you could look at it like this.

If HBM is the golden nugget bringing massive performance to the 28nm Fiji chip then imagine what it will do with a die shrunk GP?04 chip, that would be all that massive performance boost from using HBM and the boost from a die shrink, it could be EPIC.

Or of course if HBM isn't the golden nugget and only brings a small boost to the table then the GP?04 chip could as you say be only just faster than the currant TitanX/980ti, in a similar vein to the 980 vs 780ti.

as always only time will tell, only this time we don't have to wait for the first GP?04 chip as the upcoming FIJI chip will give us some idea of how much of a difference HBM will make. (don't forget that GP?04 will be using the improved gen2 HBM aswell)

I'm glad I waited. I was very close to getting SLI 970s but held off due to the vram issues. I was close to getting a gtx 980 but wasn't happy with only 4gb vram coming from a 3gb card. But now the Ti is coming out, hopefully my patience has paid off, because currently there isn't a card which fits the bill for what I want - the 8gb 290x cards were too hot and power hungry, and the Titan X was too expensive and overkill for my needs. The Ti has the right balance and I think it will be a good upgrade for me in GTA V.

Exactly and if it turns out bad or is priced too high, at least the option of the 970s are still there. I'm kinda in the same boat (but planned on one 970 first and another in a few months). I'm waiting for the new AMD cards to launch, hopefully they are decent or at least cause Nvidia to drop prices.

I was all for the 970 and thinking its silly for people to complain about the 3.5GB thing, especially as it performs well. Then I looked at benchmarks comparing FPS to memory use and I found out the FPS dropped when more than 3.5GB was used. Considering the intended longevity of my (not yet built) system and the fact that games are using more and more VRAM, especially at higher resolution, I'm considering not going for 970 anymore.

If the 980ti has similar or better price:performance than a 970, I may buy one. Or if the 980 prices drop below £400 (which I don't think will happen) I'd get one of those instead.

But this got me thinking... will Nvidia release a 970ti? They'd have to give it the full 4GB for a start. Considering current pricing and performance, it would have to be a good card at the £300-£400 range too. I'd buy one (and another later) just for the full 4GB.

Whats the price going to be for the 980 Ti and how will the noise/heat compare to the Titan X?

Is there going to be watercooled version coming out like the Titan X?

If the 980 TI stays below 700 euros, then I may consider getting 2 to SLI them with my RoG Swift. But at this point I'm legitimately concerned with longevity of NVIDIA cards considering the latest fiasco surrounding the 780 TI. Last thing I want is to dish out 1400 euros only for driver support to die out after a year when Pascal launches. Hell, it could be 6 months from now for all we know, that would **** me off tbh. AMD never pulls that kind of crap, but I can't switch sides anymore having purchased the RoG Swift, lol.
