I dont think anyone is asking nvidia to keep prices high, however the sad truth is that people are buying nvidia cards and not AMD cards, that is the only thing supporting pricing, basic supply and demand
Supply and demand is dictated by economics. Don't forget that your average hardcore gamer does not have money growing on trees. Even if NVIDIA grew to become the most despicable monopoly that would take over the entire globe (LOL!) they would still be bound to this economic reality. You can only overcharge to a certain point.
You are absolutely correct though that it is sad, the current situation for AMD that is. I miss the days of ATI putting NVIDIA into their place during Half-Life 2 days. It was a good time! :)

Nvidia are not to blame, as they'd sharp put their prices down if no one bought them, but nope, everytime they whack a card out a 1k, it absolutely flys off the shelf, they can't make the buggers fast enough.

They're moving/have moved from a supply/demand based price relationship to premium pricing.

Premium pricing (also called prestige pricing) is the strategy of consistently pricing at, or near, the high end of the possible price range to help attract status-conscious consumers. The high pricing of premium product is used to enhance and reinforce a product's luxury image. Examples of companies which partake in premium pricing in the marketplace include Rolex and Bentley.

There is still hope...

Now can you imagine the headlines? 650$ priced 980 TI oc'ed beats Titan X. Consumers buy this stuff like hotcakes. It makes absolutely NO sense for NVIDIA to overprice this card and turn off many potential buyers.

Nice!

That confirmed GTX 980 Ti launch date and NDA lift on 1 June 2015 and price at $649, also confirmed what Gibbo said 980 needed a price cut but 970 and 960 don't needed price cuts because they still selling like crazy.

Found GTX 980 launch price was $549 so $50 cut is around £40.

If only us British peeps could be so lucky. The price translates to £425 so I guess we're facing £550 - £600.

Judging from the other quoted prices, it seems 85% of the USD price as GBP is a pretty good bet - this would suggest ~£550 for 980Ti.

So what do we reckon - 980Ti at £550 - 980 at £375 and 970 at £250?

I must say i am surprised Nvidia are releasing it at the $649 mark. This must mean AMD's new cards are imminent and fairly competitive.

Sucks to have just bought a Titan X though, regardless of whether it has 12GB of ram or not.
