**Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti Review Thread**

Am I missing something or isn't the purpose of GSYNC to have the refresh rate match your fps?

It is to sync the frame to the monitor refresh, so if you fall below your max refresh you don't get tearing (vsync off) or duplicate frames (vsync on). So you get the benefits of no input lag (like vsync off) and no tearing.
You still can't expect 60fps GSYNC to be as good as 120fps GSYNC though it just lessens the impact of the lower framerates and frame dips don't feel as punishing.

I guess my opinion is partly based on never being a 120fps junkie and the feeling that GSYNC lessens the need for attempting to be locked at 100+fps.

Each to their own :) Personally I couldn't go back to < 120fps but plenty of people are happy with their 60hz screens so it is definitely a preference thing

I'd personally rather play on a big TV with home cinema system at 1080p 60FPS, than a small (in comparison) monitor 2ft away at crazy res or high fps.

BUT, I am still getting a 980Ti, as I feel cheated unless I'm playing with graphics turned up to the max, lol.

Each to their own though, that's the great thing about having so much choice :D

Exactly. Play something like dishonoured on the rog swift, at 120fps with Gsync and it feels so smooth it's like having oil on the screen. The key thing too though is motion clarity/ lack of bluriness when moving and panning the camera. This only truly comes with a high Hz refresh rate, i.e. higher than 60. At 60 fps games are still very smooth with Gsync (not counting sli stutter issues) but the motion clarity is no where near as good, and there is more 'bluriness' when moving.

It's hard to explain in words, you have to see and feel it yourself.

Yeah, running Witcher 3 at 'only' 70fps (with some options lowered) on my current rig (2x780GTX) actually makes me a feel a bit ill. And of course it fluctuates.
I guess because I am accustomed to a smoother image, so lets throw money at the problem xD

Is that with gsync on? I'm running around that fps but I've just got a ROG Swift today so not played TW3 with gsync enabled yet. I'm also on 780gtx sli and this will make or break the upgrade to 980ti sli.

That's the danger with high hz gaming. Once you've experience it it's really hard to go back, so you have to keep chucking money at new GPUs to keep up with new games.

Also BISHI- I see you run 780 SLI? I currently run 780ti SLI. Are you using Gsync too with the witcher 3?
This is another game that does not work properly with SLI and Gsync for me. The ONLY fix I have for smooth stutter free gameplay is to set the rog swift manually to 60hz, and use a third party frame rate limiter set to 59. If I have the swift set to any higher hz, it just judders. Single card is fine, and Gsync does its thing well, but my frames are only in the 40s, and motion blur is a killer, as mentioned above.

In SLI, With the 60hz, 59fps limited trick it's super smooth most of the time, except when I go near camp fires or areas with lots of people the frames go into low 50s and it stutters a bit, like Gsync isn't on at all.

The Witcher 3 is fantastic on my ROG SWIFT and SLI 980Tis. It's a damn shame Gameworks gimps performance so much.

With it on I can get anywhere from 45-75fps depending city to forest area with a pack of wolves.

Turn off hairworks and HBAO+ ( set to SSAO ), and suddenly I get nearly 90fps.
It's a fantastic experience, only marred by the off bit of frame time variance, something that I've only experienced in the Witcher 3 so far.

GTA V maxed out, including the Distance rendering never has any hiccups and is easily the smoothest game I've experienced on this setup so far.

Keep in mind that the best SLI scaling on the 980Ti's for the Witcher 3 seems to be 54% as well. The game and the drivers certainly need some work.

Good stuff. Do you plan to test any other games? I have two 980 Tis coming and am curious as to what to expect.

It depends on what I own really. I did get Batman Arkham Knight with my cards, but that's not out yet.

Have a look through here, and see if there's anything I own you want me to have a go at. I play everything with Dxtory open to keep an eye on FPS

Ryse: Son of Rome
Total War: SHOGUN 2
Metro: Last Light
Thief
Tomb Raider

Whatever you feel like doing out of those. Some of them are hard to run at MAX settings. I play at 3440x1440 so it would be about 15-20 FPS lower than what your getting.
