**Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti Review Thread**

What is considered the best card out of these for overclocking, cooling, keeping value?:

  1. MSI GeForce GTX 980Ti Gaming - £576
  2. Inno3D GeForce GTX 980Ti Herculez OC - £599
  3. EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti Superclocked ACX 2.0 - £599 (one I've ordered)
  4. Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980Ti G1 - £615 Looks great, was tempted to get this but don't want to wait a month
  5. Zotac GeForce GTX 980Ti AMP Extreme Edition - £620

Or is there not much difference?

I was originally going to order an EVGA Reference with plans to SLI them later this year but since Pascal is coming out next year I'll probably keep this 980ti for a year, sell it then buy the top Pascal card when they come out.

For overclocking it's pretty much a lottery, though this is linked to how good the cooler is to keep temperatures down. Value I would give to the EVGA because of the value of their warranty when it comes to second hand owners. The best coolers are probably the Gigabyte and MSI. Although that's based on how well those coolers did for the 980. Nothing can be said for certain until these cards are actually tested.
 
Can't say I have, but my cards boost to 1290Mhz anyway, although they are the Superclocked ones.

Some people's Superclocked cards boosted over 1300Mhz as well.

So the boost clock isn't a hard limit and the card will boost past that if thermals allow? Is the advertised figure more of an average or 'expected' then?

gigabyte and Inno3d cooled very well when I had the 980s so for cooling they are my choice then EVGA for warranty

That seems to be the case. The advertised boost clock for these Superclocked reference cooler cards is 1190, so I get at least 100Mhz more than the advertised Boost clock.
I've seen mine boost to 1303Mhz on occasions.

I think the advertised figure is more an safe bet depending on conditions like thermals and power.

Why is everyone so high on evga cards? Seems to be the first brand most people go for but from what i've seen of their rma's theyre very good at sending out refurbed cards regardless of how new the defective card is?
 
Take this with a pinch of salt, but a lot of other e-tailors are claiming 9th of June for the earliest date for delivery for EVGA 980Ti's, even though OcUK hasn't put up a date yet (which I think is better in this case). So potentially no cards for anyone until next Tues.

Not sure if its legit, but if this is the EVGA 980 TI Superclocked, it runs much hotter then I would have imagined even in SLI 78-88c is insanely hot. I want headroom for OC'ing. I will not touch any of these cards with a ten-foot pole.
Have heard absolutely nothing about MSI or Asus strix release estimate for their custom 980 TI's. I'm still really unsure what version I should go for. I'm not ruling out any potential candidate.

After having ran Fermi cards for years without issues, these aren't an issue for me. As long as they don't throttle and get loud it's all good to me. From what I've seen they have similar temps to the Titan X as well.

My two EVGA Superclocked reference cooler cards in an NZXT H440 max out at 84 degrees in SLI with a max clock of 1303Mhz.

Wouldn't mind snagging 2 myself just for a change, possibly 2 superclocked version and get the hybrid cooler later possibly at some point. Stock is just an issue and with fiji showing soon. Bah, waiting game.
 
Thanks for fixing the link. And tbh it is a big deal to me even if it weren't throttling. I just want more oc headroom. My MSI GTX970 is overclocked as well with 450+ memory and 170+ core, and it doesn't go above 64c even in the toughest stress tests, although usually its at around 60c give or take. Perhaps I'm being obsessive over tempratures, but it will definitely be a factor when I purchase a custom card.
 
Thinking of getting one with a waterblock for a new water build.

Wondering if there is any benefit at all in buying one that OCUK has put the block on, or just buying the same parts and doing myself for less. It's cheaper that way and I could get the EVGA reference card which has a longer warranty than the OCUK Labs model with the block already attached.
 
My stock EVGA reference card hits 82c and the only reason it won't go higher (according to the PerfCap reason in GPU-Z) is because it needs more voltage, not because it thinks it's too hot (fan speed is only around 50% iirc). I imagine the Superclocked cards give more voltage by default than reference.

What do people mean exactly when they say the card is throttling? As in, the clock gets to a peak and then drops back?

Yes, throttling is where the temp gets to a certain point and then the mhz drops to allow the card to cool, so it will be at say 1200, get to 80C or more and then drop to 1000

factory overclocked cards will have the power limit slightly increased, so it might not give more voltage as such but it will be allowing the card to draw more power (as these cards control both voltage and amperage)
once you get past a certain point you will also need extra voltage
