580 was full DP Compute and intended high end, the GF104 680 was crippled DP Compute and originally intended for mid range before GF100 bad yields.

Not sure what the 580 to 670 comparison is for as it ended up 580 > 680 so would be 570 > 670.

It feels like this is the longest generation ever.

We probably wont see the 800 series until first quarter next year, surely nVidia have something else up their sleave as that's a damn long way away.

Someone said that new maxwell cards could mean a big price drop on a 780, he was just asking if the price of a 580 dropped off when the 680/670 launched, hes not making a direct comparison between the two

And, my recollection is that I sold a second hand 580 and used the money to buy a 670... If I managed to sell a used 580 for 670 money then I cant imagine there were retailers selling them at that price

Mostly, distributors and retailers will try to run down their stock when a new card is coming out, so you might get a few last minute deals but it isnt like they will keep making and shipping 780's when the new cards are released

So thinking about it a bit, we are fairly certain that the first 800 series card will be the GM104 part (680/770 replacement) and going by the 750 Maxwell chips the performance is nearly double the previous GK107 chip. So if the new GM104 part is going to perform at roughly double the performance of the previous GK104 that puts it at about 690 performance, which isn't really enough to say faster than the 700 series.
Therefore I reckon the new cards will have to be on 20nm, otherwise the new 800 series card will be about the same performance as the currant 780ti, which really doesn't make any sense at all.

My prediction:
I expect the new cards to hit before the end of the year, be on 20nm and be 25/30% faster than the currant 780ti.

Of course there will be a sizable price drop on 780's when the 880's are released. That's how it works :p. There will be a month or two where all the retailers will be selling off excess stock e.t.c. This is how I buy graphics cards! GTX 480 for £190. 2x 670's for £160 a piece plus loads of games :p.

I could be tempted by 780 sli this time around if they drop to near £200-£250 each.

Updated Export Data Confirms Nvidia Maxwell GM204 has 256Bit Bus Width – Where does that leave the GTX 880?

[Editorial] The GTX 880 could possibly have 384 TMUs and a 512 Bit Bus. But wait, it says 256 Bit on the heading? Well yes it does, and in all probability it will feature a 256 Bit bus, meaning the 512 Bit thing is just a rumor. Confused? I guess I better start from the beginning then.

This reminds me of PCI-E slots, just because they are x16 does not mean they are any good.

No one in their right mind is going to want to use PCI-E 1.0 x16 but they will be quite happy to use PCI-E 3.0 x8.

So far we have only got tiny bits of the puzzle, lets wait until we have the full picture before we make our minds up.

Gonna try not to jump in first with the new cards. I wanna see what AMD have to offer as well. Tbh I'm happy with 290X performance level, cooler / quieter / less heat would be spot on.

Changing the subject, not long now... Come on England !!!!!!!!!!!

Playing well so far, we were closing them down a lot more early in the first half. Probably the heat getting to the players, slowing down a bit now. That goal was a beauty, Rooney's pass was spot on.

I'm not that sure on where I stand with the 880 with regards to the rumoured specs.

I'm wanting to upgrade the 680 as it is just at the point of starting to struggle with some games. I was hoping that the 880 launching toward the end of the year would provide a good upgrade and run GTA V smoothly. But the rumoured 256bit bus has me concerned that the card won't perform well if I upgrade to a 1440p or even 4K monitor later down the line.

IMO dont worry wait till the specs are confirmed before you plan ahead

High End Flagship Core Maxwell GM200 on the 20nm Node Spotted in Shipping Data

Alright, when I was writing my previous editorial, I actually found something else too, namely the GM200 Core, in the shipping data. But since that warranted a post of its own, I refrained from mentioning it there. So heres the thing, The GM200 Core, or the ultra-high-end Maxwell Core (almost certainly 20nm), has been spotted in transit.
