The issue isn't just at 4k. At 1080p the 1% lows for all the 8gb cards are poor from all vendors using ultra quality preset, however dropping to high seems to make this playable for the most part

Of course it’s planned obsolescence. In a few cases Nvidia are generous with memory, like the 1080Ti, 3090…but most of the time they give you ‘just enough’.
3090 was generous with memory, but not with performance or price. Twice the price for 10% extra perf. Better card for playing Alpha or Beta releases I guess, if you wanna sell it like that.
I guess 8GB owners should be happy that they still have 720p as an option to get ultra working.

Nvidia killed the mid range a long time ago. To them? there is no such thing as a cheap GPU any more.

Since better textures are about the easiest way to make a game look better, I never buy the "that card is too weak to need more than X VRAM" argument.
Not only do Nvidia get to decided on what each SKU should have, they have also prevented AIBs from making double VRAM cards, so planned obsolescence and market segmentation is the most probably answer.
Problem is, these threads tend to get closed by partisan denial posters - almost like it happens on purpose.
