Nvidia re-release Shield Tablet K1

Wouldn't it be more down to the CPU rather than the GPU? My understanding was that the Shield has a quad core running at 2.2GHz whereas the Nexus has a dual core running at 2.3GHz!?!? (not that I have the slightest clue as to which one of these is better!)

The Nexus 9 has Denver cores which are far better than the A15s in the Shield.

They are a generation above and markedly better.

Yes in terms of total processing power, the 4 cores may win in a multi-threaded processing task but in terms of usability, 2 fast cores wins.

That is exactly what Apple does. The Snapdragon 608 also goes the dual A57 route and does very well.

Yep, looks like they've dropped producing their own ARMv8 chips and just using ARM's standard A57 design.

Going to order one soon for Christmas. A little on the small side but for the price and performance it is hard to find a better value for money tablet with that performance.

I would have went for the Nexus 9 but the 32 gb is too expensive and if I go for the 16 gb version I can't upgrade the storage when I inevitably run out of space.

What are the weight of these like? The Samsung Tab 2 7 I use currently is around the same weight and feels really weighty compared to other tablets of recent years. And these were with bigger screen size.

Another point to consider is the Nexus 9 comes with forced encryption, which does slow things down a bit.

It's quite heavy - 356g. The Tab 2 7 is only 341g and it's a brick!

For comparison the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 is 265g, hell even the the 9.7 is 389g. The iPad mini 4 is 299g.

Yeah, I'd agree on it being heavy, but it has quite an even weight distribution, so it feels ok... isn't there a saying, "weight is a sign of reliability"?

:p

I picked up a Shield K1 a few days ago and so far it's been great!

Maybe a little heavier than I would have liked but nothing too uncomfortable!

Has anyone got any experience of the official case/cover? I't looks pretty decent but I'm a little worried that it doesn't protect the rear of the device and the "clips" that hold it in would be under a fair bit of pressure so they'd need to be pretty sturdy!

I've been looking for a case for mine too (tablet should be delivered today). I would have ordered the official case if it had been in stock. But I've got similar concerns to you.

All the hard rear and folding front style cases seem to be for the old version, I know these fit fine, but having a hole in the rear for a stylus that isn't on the new device would annoy me.

Mine is the original tablet but pretty sure the case is the same for both.

For a front cover it is pretty good, although I think it is expensive. The clips/magnets are actually pretty strong.

A few times when mine has been wedged in my bag/plane seat pocket I though the case will not be attached when removing but it has always still been attached. The only time it came off (only partially) was when I dropped it after security in an airport.

I would like a full cover for it but haven't found any that don't seem pretty poor quality/compromised.

In the end I've decided against the official case due to the lack of any protection to the back of the tablet.

Having trawled through dozens of other cases I got frustrated and bought the "Fyy Ultra Slim Magnetic Smart Cover Multi-Angle Case for NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet"

Not the prettiest of beasts but having bought a fantastic Stilgut case way back when for my Galaxy Tab 7.7, it seemed the closest to that style! (not overly keen on the "tri-bend" one's - prefer the ones that have a single bend and then rests on the other flap!)

If it's no good then it's only £8 down the drain so not the end of the world!

This might be a silly question, especially after buying one, but how exactly does the gaming work on the Shield K1?

I've hooked up the Nvidia HUB to my network and can stream some PC games to my Shield tablet over WiFi (can't see why I'd ever use this feature however as the PC still needs to be on and working!?!?) and I can see Nvidia's own games can be bought (and I assume installed locally?) but I assume nothing else is playable on the tablet whilst away from home?

Basically I'm trying to weigh up whether it is worth getting the Nvidia controller - are there enough games at a reasonable cost to make it a worthwhile purchase?

Locally your limited to actual Android games, but (I think) there are a few titles that are exclusive to Nvidia like Half Life 2, Portal and Doom 3. These are all native Android games but need some sort of controller to play them. For the wider Android game catalogue which don't have support for controllers it has a built in tool which allows you to map screen touches to physical buttons on the controller.

In terms of the official case; it's fine my only complaint would be that often when you close the case it actually registers touches from the cover. Say if I closed it with Chrome open I'd often find 5 or 6 new tabs open when I come back to use it where it's registered a screen press as it was closed.

You can play some PC games streamed from the NVidia cloud. You should get 3 months free to try it out. Worth a shot to see if you'll use it, for me, I'll be using the 3 months then cancelling as the generation of games is far enough behind for their not to be many people on the multiplayer modes.

StevieP, would be interested to hear about that case, may take a punt myself if you like it.

In terms of gaming, it was the reason I originally purchased my shield, with a controller. I went from a Tab 7.7 to the shield. Personally it was not worth getting the controller based on how much I have used it.

To be honest buying it for gaming was a bit daft on my part, that said it is still a great tablet in my opinion.

The case has landed today so I should be able to post some feedback and pics over the next day or so.

It looks OK, bit weird that the inside is grey whereas the rest is black but I don't think that will put me off too much! It's got the cut-out for where the stylus went on the original Shield tablet but again, not a deal-breaker for me!

Can't quite make my mind up on the controller - there is a fairly impressive list of games on the Nvidia HUB and I gather you get 3 months free if you sign up for the subscription service with a credit card - might give that a go I guess (although to get the best out of them I'd need a controller anyway!)

I've ordered the same case along with one of the tri folding front type. I'll keep one and send the other back most likely. I may end up going for the official case one they come back in stock, but want something for the time being at the very least.

A few pics of the case I bought with the tablet in situ...

Seems to stand very well in the landscape position - there is a little plastic "lip" on the bit that fits around the tablet to help it stay in place.

Not the sexiest looking case but doesn't look too bad imo!

There is a flat "cover" on the plastic moulded part that would have looked better if it was the same shape as the plastic bit but again, looks OK!

Another bonus is that the on/off with the magnetic connection works perfectly - helps me a lot given that the power button isn't the best!

All in all I'd recommend this case so far - bargain at 8 quid!! :D

Was tempted to buy the controller yesterday, when i'd seen it for sale at £40, but it's gone back up to £50 today. Think i'll definitely get it at some point, but i'm not prepared to pay £50 for it.

Been playing around with the PSP emulators, come to the conclusion that there a bit of a waste of time really. The games available on GRID and the play store are much better optimised and work so much better. I've not tried to many to be fair, as i'm assuming the lack of controller limits what you can actually play.

Really want to give Half Life 2 a play though with the controller.
