NVIDIA RTX 3080Ti to launch in January 2021?

Pretty much been saying it in other threads. SKU is hardly new in the sense Nvidia already has all the ingredients. Makes sense, basically 3090 slight less VRAM and bus priced at 6900xt price and let Nvidia mindshare, software stack etc let it compete vs the 3900xt.

Don't expect anything different from the 3070/3080/3090 launch, how are they going to release a 3080Ti when they can't even supply 70/80/90 tier cards?

Well we all knew it was coming it was just a matter of when, didn't expect january though if thats true. They can't possibly deliver any meaningful stock at that point but I guess if people are prepared to sit on preorders for months on end it doesn't really matter. Either that or nvidia has been sitting on parts trickling out stock waiting to see what AMD come up before deciding to release the floodgates.

If they launch this with such a massive worldwide backlog of current orders then they're absolute ******** and clearly don't give a **** about the consumers buying product. I'm praying now to get a 3080 at some point in the next 6 weeks, if not then I'm out and will hold onto my 1080Ti for another few years until they can sort their **** out. Utter **** take at this point.

Paper launch in Jan. No realistic stock levels till May at the very least. Nvidia should not bother launching any new products until the existing stock issues with 3080 are fixed.

January 2021 - Paper Launch
May 2022 - Start Manufacturing at small levels
Xmas 2023 - Deliveries of first 10 pre-orders to commence....

meanwhile scalping online retailers increase the price about 5 times

Indeed. I am quite glad to see some stock is finally starting to appear on AIB own website shops at MSRP. For example the Asus 3090 OC Strix is available and in stock at £1,495. The price it was always meant to be and should have been the most expensive 3090 you could buy from anybody judging by Asus pricing in previous generations. The fact I saw a 3090 FTW Ultra go into stock the other day for £2100 and was sold within minutes sums up just how made people have got.

I am cancelling my 3090 pre order. I might buy one when I see one in stock at £1495. But seems daft to be paying £1700 for a card which might be matched by a 3080ti come Jan for £500 less or match/beaten by a 6900xt for £700 less.

January / Feb is not entirely unreasonable. Can see a competitor for example is getting over 400 3090s which will clear there entire pre-order backlog (granted they not kept offering pre-orders). If sales do not increase rapidly with the 3090 when we see those orders lift, which they may not with AMD on the scene at revealed prices, then makes absolute sense for Nvidia to put the 3090 core into a Ti model rather then cut it down even more to go into a 3080 or 3090 at its current price which may not sell as much.

Sure does mean 3080 backlog will remain huge for a while, in fact same competition is only getting 280 odd 3080s, so far less then 3090s and simply put Nvidia won’t care, and if I was them as a business neither would I. Rather put my 3090 core in a higher margin 3080Ti which is at a price point that can sell then go into a lower margin 3080. More so if as per rumour, it’s going on the 3080FE PCB (3090s is different) so only cost change will really be additional memory, GA102 core which they have anyways, yet charge more.

Suffice to say, how AMD stacks up in next few weeks will determine how quick we will see a Ti Model. The parts are all there and if the competition is as good as it looks, they will bring a Ti SKU to the market quickly, abit not in massive numbers either I expect.

Is there any point to this for gamers? They have already said the 3090 is not aimed at gamers and it doesn't look like the specs of the 3080Ti will be too far short of that. I always wondered if 10GB was particularly future proof, I have been considering getting a 3090 for this exact reason

3080Ti was the SKU I was really holding out for but with all the shortages and price hikes I just went with the 3090 FE in end - I dont normally buy the halo products but caved in the end.

I would agree that if the Ti is on the same PCB as the 3080 it could be a another long wait for this card.

What do you think of the 3090? Was it worth it the asking price? I ask because I am considering getting one myself.

It's not about cards in machines, it's about having a faster product and market superiority.

Until the competition's cards start flowing, then it changes. This should be a good indication of when Nvidia expect AMD's stock to start flowing.

Bingo, the whole Amphere debacle has always been about that. Get the market leader out, take people's money in advance, now the ti launch is wash, rinse and repeat that process.

Now watch people fall for the same trick all over again, paying in advance for the privilege of waiting in a queue...

Overall I am happy with the performance increase over my old 1080ti but I would have been with the 3080 also. For the increase in performance over the 3080 it is clearly not worth the extra cost. But wrongly or rightly justified it to myself because -
  • I plan to skip the next generation and 10Gb was just not cutting it
  • I have an UW G-sync monitor and did not want to give that up (otherwise I would have likely gone AMD providing software is okay)
  • If the 3080ti is 999 then it will be scalped to 1200 so 1399 for the 3090 is not that much extra in the grand scheme of things and was available now.
  • I didnt buy a turing so had some savings
  • The whole shortages/ waiting was becoming ridiculous sometimes life is just too short.
