NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - (PRE)ORDER DISCUSSION **NO COMPETITOR HINTING**

I am on a 7800XT, but ordered a 5900 to go in my new pc.
Still number 170 in the queue (down from 225), so potentially a long wait.

Due to this I ordered a 970 and the plan is now:
A) Keep the 970 and cancel the 5090 (saving just short of 2k)
B) move the 970 to my old pc, keep the 5090 and sell the 7800XT.

Will see how some games play and go from there. I just want a competent graphics card to power an ultrawide monitor that is quiet. Is that too much to ask?

I think the GTX 970 is a bit of a downgrade on the 7800XT, but I'm guessing Borderlands 2 with Physx will run well ;)

Which 5090 do you have on order?

Supply is slightly improved from just about zero, but prices seem to be rising as more retailers realise they can make a few quid.
Personally I’ve nearly had an overpriced one a few times or even a high msrp model, but the more I hear about real world experiences, the less I am prepared to pay tbh.
So I’m going to wait it out, (I have a 4090 which is still doing a remarkable job)

Even many of the system builders are having a hard time procuring 5090s.

Falcon Northwest is a high end boutique PC maker that has been around a long time. In less than 2 months, their 5090 systems have increased by $1000 for the same specs. They said that it's because they have to pay much more to get 5090s to build the systems on time.

Installed my 5090 now..
I don't know what to do - I now know what coil whine is..
Is it always that bad on the FE or should I send it back? It is very audible.
I've heard a lot of reports of coil whine on the FE, so I think even if you sent it back for a replacement you'd probably get it again.

My 3080 FE has it quite bad as well. I mainly use headphones for gaming though so it doesn't bother me too much.

Updated my original post, it should have said 970XT, which I think is still a bit of an upgrade on the 7800XT

The 5090 is a Suprim (Air)

9070xt is pretty much the perfect card for Ultrawide 3440x1440 (37% less than 4k). A 5090 is somewhat wasted on that resolution. It'll be around 32% faster than a 7800xt in raster, considerably faster in RT.

I think there are supposed to be some stress-routines you can run on a new card with bad coil whine that sometimes settle it down a bit. I'd try that before sending it back.

I've got a little on my Palit Gamerock 5090, but it's only really audible on menus and loading screens. If it's still there during actual gameplay (and I suspect it isn't) it's inaudible over fans anyway. I can live with that. It's nothing like my old 1080Ti FE, where you could play tunes by loading up Witcher 3 and spinning the camera.

Although I've heard people who have had it get less. I've never had any coil whine on my GPUs get less over time, so I personally wouldn't be too hopeful.

Same. Have had plenty of cards over the years with coil whine and tried plenty of fixes. Nothing alleviates it except sometimed undervolting, and it doesn't get better over time.

I found coil whine has improved a bit on my FE since I first got it.
It's also a lot less now I've modified the voltage curve which has also given it a performance boost whilst limiting the power to around 450w

Undervolt it, I had to do it on my FE 3080.

That is the last FE model I will try, I am only getting AIB cards now, better temps, coil whine, etc. from my experience.

This whole situation is rather crazy, dodgy power connector, missing ROPs bad supply and removal of key features and the demand for this is still so high. I just hope AMD start to eat into nvidias middle ground so they become less complacent in the future. Wishful thinking probably.. I am sure the 4090 / 3090 supply situation picked up faster than this, but could be just rose tints.
