NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

Short supply of the 5080, which some reviewers are saying is only 10% faster than a GPU that has been on the market for 2.5 years, is a bit of a joke and probably buyers getting close to having had enough. Hopefully Nvidia can ramp up production of the 5080 soon for those that want one. Can understand the supply and demand issues of the 5090 ,being so far ahead in specs and performance, but really should have had a good supply of 5080's for launch.

So the 5080 is underwhelming and barely an upgrade with nothing really to warrant a purchase. But yet the limited stock is still flying off shelves because of FOMO and hype.

Nvidia could have made the 5080 $1500 and the 5090 $3000 and the same thing would have happened.

I think people have a limited to be honest. But limited stock will always sell out. Ignoring the price and performance, it's just absurd Nvidia can't even supply in decent quantities a GPU just 10% faster(or so) than the outgoing 2.5 year old model. Probably more to do with commercial demand for its products I assume

There will be a limit somewhere but I don't think we are close to it for the flagship. People were paying significantly more for a 3080 and 3090 back in the shortage times than a 5090 is now and we have undergone a fair amount of inflation and wage increases since then.

It is odd to me that people are rushing to spend more money on a GPU that is slower and with less VRAM than it was possible to get the 4090, albeit the 4090 is in short supply now.

Not just those reasons there will be many people with a 2080 or older wanting to upgrade as an example or an older AMD card.

Personally I'd say it's more a design choice as nothing physically stopped them from designing it with a wider bus.

This video has made me feel better about not getting a 5080 on launch day

Have a look at the 5080 FPS in Far Cry 6 at 4k. 7:00 minute mark.

If you're spending that kind of money then a 4090 genuinely makes significantly more sense.

For £100-200 more you get a card with 24GB of VRAM and is quicker in everything.

Yeah it does but finding one at a sensible price is getting very hard but with the 5080 not everyone is an enthusiast and reads this forum. Some still think a 5080 = 4090.

I was just watching the astral 5080 review and yea, asus made a real piece of **** here - what a bizarre, ugly, underperforming shroud

But I'm kind of intrigued that with a heavy overclock, the 5080 does seem to get within a few FPS of a 4090

i bet you that in production cost, a 5090 costs $75 at most, R&D wont be much as Nvidia already have the infrastructure, their profit margins on GPU's are very high, even for a $2000 5090
