NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

Saw a YouTube vid this week from KitGuruTech and Leo had a quote from Nvidia. He asked them what % of GPU’s are tested by Nvidia before they leave the ‘fab’. This was in relation to the missing rops issue.

The answer was “all of them. 100%, but the rop issue … it was a testing escape”

Lovely wording. So 0% then were tested for missing rops.
Or indeed full rops! Nor did any AIB partner test either!

How on earth can they know only 0.5% had missing rops then. And then subsequently not know about the 5080’s missing rops and now the laptop GPU missing rops.

The answer is they are lying through their teeth.

it likely wasn't testing escape or not testing, they shipped them full well knowing the issue as they had to get stock on shelves. I woul dimagine they discussed this all internally and got their PR guys to work on how to play it depending on how quickly the issue raised it's head in the wild. The probably had a manufacturing issue that knackerd an entire batch which under normal circumstances they probably would have binned off. But this was a massively hyped up launch so they needed to ship, while probably quietly in the back were already manufacturing replacements for all the RMA's.

NVIDIA also porbably were banking that the average consumer who isn't a hardcore enthusiast probably hasn't even heard of GPU-Z and were liekly to never know they were missing a shed load of ROPS. It's basic dishonesty 101.

Jeeezus .... Just goes to show how poor the QA is on these products.

There should be a minimum of 3 QA checks done before it hits the market... This worries me a lot
These things are made by robots I suspect there's little to no QA as they expect every card to be identical and perfect

QA would be built into the process, its not disimilar to continuous manufaturing in the pharma industry which requires real time Quality Control testing / real time quality release testing i.e it gets tested right off the line and in process during the manufacture to ensure consistent manufacturing to the required release specification and where deviations are found resulting in out of spec results the line is effectively paused, the out of spec part of the run binned off and the tooling effectively recalibrated to ensure manufacturing then conttinues to the correct spec.

IMHO this wasn't a slip, or a QA issue, or an issue of the testing not being discriminatory enough. They knew exactly what defects those cards rolled of the line with and simply chose to still ship them and sort it later. If this was the pharma industry their equivalent to the qualified person (the poor sod that accepts responsibilty for releasing every product that leaves the production line stating its fit for human use) would actually get arrested and likely face a court case. Thats not an exageration either. health Authority inspectorates have no problems getting arrest warrants for QP's and execs that knowingly release out of spec products and falisfy release documentation syaing its actually ok, its basically fraund at best and potentially something way more serious if there are patients that end up suffering either due to medication not working as designed or worse suffering serious side effects if for example products are released with unacceptably high levels of impurities or were cross contaminated witth materials / substances (active or inactive) that should not be present in the finished product.

Whilst knowingly releasing of out of spec computer components isn't exactly in the same ball park as pharmacueticals, the ethics behind what happened here are exactly the same. They made a corporte decision to knowingly release out of specificaiton products in the hope they wouldn't take too much heat as only a minority of their consumer base are "enthusiasts" that would pick up the defect using the usual benchmarking tools.

I've been looking at them. I genuinely don't think I can get away with buying anything else at the moment though
I've had the chance to buy the Palit 5090 the few times it's come in stock. It's just over £2.2k

Is there a reason why it's much cheaper than the others?

No idea, but I got one and it's been no issue at all so far.

I have just ordered a MSI Inspire 5080, going from a 3080 4k gaming can see this as a good upgrade, obviously more expensive but I am thinking prices are only going to go up, only about £270 over the FE model. Hopefully I get a full spec card but it will e the first thing I check
Most likely prices will go up, we are already looking at scalped prices either AMD or Nvidia this gen. The first batch of order is probably the most cost effective option long term, that is if you want to buy into latest gen.

Prices won’t go up, there are only a small number of people prepared to pay way above the MSRP and most of them would already have cards by now except maybe for the 5090 which hasn’t really had any stock at all up to this point.

I agree with that, retailers holding stock will question why aren’t their stock moving, because of the price!

Positive signs so far, the MSI 5080 Inspire has been in stock for a minimum of 12 hours at £1,269.99 so far. Even scalpers are losing interest.

Has anyone seen any of the aorus xtreme waterblocked cards in the wild in the UK? (Not the AIO) version.

I’m in a queue which is reducing but have a feeling it’s due to cancellations.

There was a drop yesterday for a grand total of two of them on another site. Those are the first ones I've seen available anywhere.

So pleased I bought my 4090 for £1300 3 weeks before the 5090 launch from FB Marketplace, it felt like a stupid amount of money at the time and I took a long time deliberating. I had a 2nd hand 3090 that I bought for £600, I used this for a year and sold to a colleague for £400 after I bought the 4090. 3090s are now going for £650+

I was originally going to buy a 5090 but was impatient. I feel bad for the guy that sold it to me who was selling to upgrade to a 5090. I have over a years warranty left on the 4090.

I bought a new Alienware AW3423DWF 3440x1440 QDOLED monitor (amazing btw) for £660 from Dell. The 4090 & monitor cost less than buying a 5090 plus a lot of change.

Pricing of high end GPUs, second hand or new has gone crazy!!

Wouldn’t feel too bad for him, as long as it wasn’t a stupidly expensive model and he owned it from release he got top end performance for 2 years and potentially only took a £2-300 loss.

3090 owners were taking a £900 loss when selling them on 2 years later.

It doesn't even seem possible to find RRPs for AIB cards now. Maybe listed in a review but most of those are in dollars. I suppose it's good really as MSRPs are almost meaningless at this point.

Imagine the loss 5090 owners will potentially be looking at especially if AMD can launch something at the high end next gen which means Nvidia have to get competitive again.

Fire strike score on my 5070Ti Asus Prime if anyone was interested

I have no idea if they are decent scores or not to be honest, i swear we used to have a benchmark thread somewhere here.
