Right im thinking on joining the Nvidia shield gang lolol. Just a few questions though what size external HDD can you use via the usb looking to use it for my movie collection via Aeon nox skin on KODI with my films on the external HDD. and can you play 3d films via KODI. i know the android box i have at the min only allows up to 2 TB external drive thats nothing

I'm not aware of a drive size limit, it reads most formats too not just FAT32 like the ATV. You can play HSBS with Kodi but it won't play full frame 3D files.

I've had a play with my Dad's over the weekend. Never even heard of it before but it's quite a neat little device. Navigating the GUI is a bit tricky, I was expecting it to be like the Xbox but had real trouble getting back to the home screen. I couldn't work out how to do it.

But streaming Twitch and YouTube was great. I would have had a go on the Geforce streaming thing but he hadn't signed up and didn't want to do it without asking him first.

I'm pretty tempted to get one myself and I was wondering about external HDD playback too. So it can read NTFS?

Then you spoke to an idiot.

I just walked in to the other room and plugged in a 4tb to check it of course works and someone on the forums has an 8tb working fine.

You will do for me mate im going to buy one now. Thsanks for letting me know. He said they only tested with a 1TB he could not say if it could take an higher one then 1TB. This is a device that can do 4K with no 4K disc drive and saying it can only take a 1TB lolol

What drive did you test it with please

You should get the Nvidia Sheild Remote. then navigation is a breeze with voice of ipod classic style navigation.

If you guys want More storage, Why limit yourself to USB? that's pretty silly think of connections Ethernet. http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/nexus2cee_02.jpg

NAS with plex/kodi app (synlology) +shield limitless Storage...

Android should be able to read any good Filestytem FAT32/NTFS/EXT3/EXT4 + more its Linux after all so the storage limit should not even be a issue
ive had mine from Day 1. its the best device ive bought in good 5 years. use it everyday for good 4 hours.

a cheap Seagate external.

I think it only fair to point out that I am still in 2 minds about this device.

1 My controller broke after 2 days but hey these things happen.

My main focus for buying one was for 4K streaming and not games and in general it works extremely well.

However I have an issue with Kodi that I have not resolved.. yet and it is probably nothing to do with the Shield. (I get a random connection lost on high bit rate videos, not a lot maybe once every couple of hours).

This problem does not happen with an external hard drive and it does not happen with an amazon fire 4k using the same gigabit link.

When I say this does not happen with an external drive I also mean it plays a 90gb native 4k movie very well indeed.

For the moment though my very small collection of 4K movies plays from a physical disc.

Do not be put off though my issues are with the extreme end of what the device can do, it is very good.

Plays 4k fine here. The CPU/GPU could easily do 4k 60 films

Well im having probs streaming over my local network i have tried with powerlines. To stream via my pc movies 1080p which is upstairs to my Android box downstairs via KODI smb share and it stutters. I have tried the plex server on my pc to my android plex app and it says your connection to the server was not fast enough. So think sod it get the Shield and a drive plug it in and play me films via kodi from the drive and let kodi sort my fanfart exc via the Aeon Nox skin

Do not misunderstand me , it works and plays very high quality content very well my issue is network related.

The thing is using the same network I do not get issues with similar devices in particular this replaced an amazon fire TV 4K model.

So how do the games from Google Play work? Does the Shield run any android app/game? Can it play things like Plants vs Zombies 2 that need a touch interface? Or does it need special versions like Amazon devices do?

The app needs to support Android TV for you to be able to download it from the Play Store. There is very limited selection of apps and games which are officially compatible; Plants vs Zombies 2 is not one that works. Even new releases such as Final Fantasy IX, where there is no reason that it shouldn't support both controllers and Android TV, don't support it.

If you have the APK for the app you can manually install it, but how well it would actually work is a bit hit and miss. If it's reliant on touch inputs then there's no chance of it working (as far as I know anyway).

ive got something strange happening with mine, i plugged it into my new TV yesterday and it was outputting at 4k 60hz and now the screen just flickers on and off and all choppy, seems to be losing the HDMI connection every 10 seconds or so aswell, ive put it down to 4k 26.729hz or whatever the lowest option was and its fine again now, anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is?

likely to be cable quality

I'm really tempted by one of these. My old nuc is doing the job but it's not overkill for kodi and thats want I want for a buttery smooth experience.

Would also mean I can get rid of my steam link and have a single product replace two others.
