Nvidia to launch GeForce GTX 880 in September

Isn't the bus fine for 1440p?

It all depends how fast the GTX 880 is going to be, if it is 20% or 30% faster than a GTX 680 the bus will be ok for 1440p. If it is a bit faster than a 780ti then things could get bottlenecked at 1440p.

If the rumours are true that the card has a 256bit bus then this could be a clue that the card will not be as fast as the GK110 based ones.

would make more sense
midrange card wouldnt affect their prices so much

if amd release a new midrange card and one thats a little faster you can see nvidia having the same

I would have thought so. My 2 780s pretty much rock 1400p no problems

But the 780 have a larger bus so not sure I get your point. I need an nvidia card which will drive 2560x1440 in BF4 @ 130+ fps 99% of the time and my 780 @ 1200mhz is not quite cutting it it with the settings i use. The hit between 1080 and 2560x1440 is quite noticeable.

I hope the rumors are bs and nvidia are releasing a true 780/780ti re badge. If that's not the case this will be the 3rd rebadge.

The figures will come at the announcement event detailed in OP.

What is that card AMD are bringing out with a 256bit bus?

The reason I ask this is NVidia and AMD often have a good idea what each other are up to and this may be the case here with AMD having their card ready for whatever part of the market it is to contest.

Amd are supposedly bringing in a replacement for the 280/x. So mid/high replacement of Tahiti using Tonga. So Nvidia and Amd's new cards won't be competing in the same bracket.

It will probably be like the 580>680

Evgadominik says there's something good coming round the corner so we'll see but I donut there will be better value than a r9 290 for £255

The 285 (Tonga)? That will slot in between 280 and 290, maybe slower than 280X even.

No idea what AMD have planned to counter Maxwell, they've been suspiciously quiet. There IS a 295X coming but it's supposed to just be a slight clock bump on Hawaii. Doubt it would compete with 880.

AMD are always suspiciously quiet, The GTX Titan was proclaimed by many as Nvidia's ACE because AMD had nothing to counter it, 6 Moths later the surprise 290X beat it.
You can't develop a new GPU and bring it to market in 6 Months, these things take a lot longer than that, the 290/X was on the Drawing Board a short while after they launched the 7970.

AMD just don't like to show their hand. Them being quiet about what GPU's they may or may not have lined up is just the AMD Norm, it means nothing.

Hmm, if some of the figures being bandied about are accurate I won't feel so bad about just getting my new 780. As per bloody usual a small, incremental step rather than a complete revolution that we used to see when AMD/ATI traded blows with Nvidia.

I'll just sit and wait for the 20/16nm process

Same, will have the funds by then as well. Not interested in any more 28nm slight upgrade cards. What I really want is a single GPU that can run all games at max settings @ 1440P. A card that can handle Crysis 3 at that res would be spot on. If you look at the current cards even the highest end has to drop settings for that game, if you have to drop settings might as well settle for something lower end until the real performance cards come out, and can truly handle 1440P. I might be in for a long wait :D, until then I'll just use this lil low end 270 :p

Or until a good deal comes along boom :p
Often we do forget those low end cards are still quite good

Still don't get the 256 bit memory bus when the 780 is 384 bit. Am I missing something?

With the 6xx series they managed to sell mid-range cards at high-range prices. In the 8xx series they'll be doing the same with low-range cards.

Obviously that's an exaggeration but Nvidia do seem to be trying to market progressively lower end cards as high end cards at a high end price point and then releasing the actual high end cards as extreme cards at equally extreme prices.
