NVIDIA Volta with GDDR6 in early 2018?

Poor volta? It's being dropped and Ampere is the successor the next jump after Volta? Which will succeed Pascal? Well seems nVidia are working hard to put RTG in the ground lol.

But but but everyone said Volta early next year even as soon as end of 2k17 for gamers? I kept banging on that nVidia won't be rushing out Volta for gamers for a while. Ampere could quite be a pascal refresh. I mean Jenson did say he thinks pascal is too strong and has no plans on replacing it. But does have some interesting stuff in the pipeline for gamers. Hello refresh?

Would certainly be an overall revenue boost for nVidia, Pascal on 12nm and push back Volta a little. Don't think it's ever been done before, but they've always had competition pushing them before now...

The negative to that is it will hold back games a little. Faster GPU's in the hands of consumers would entice Devs to make more complex/demanding games.

And if this new Pascal on 12nm chips have the same DX 12 capabilities as the current Pascal generation DX12 will take that much longer to be viable as well.

His words were quite specific that there wouldn't be a replacement for GeForce Pascal this side of Christmas - but he didn't rule out there being a Titan like card within the timeframe he was talking about or what would come next year.

I kinda don't mind this. As we know, gameplay is king, and the games with the most amazing graphics aren't always the most enjoyable. We're at a tipping point atm imo where graphics are solid, and devs will have to focus more and more on gameplay in order to differentiate themselves from the competition. We all know what has happened to Hollywood in this respect, thinking that throwing $$$ at the screen = a better movie when it really doesn't!

Yes he said for the holiday season or the foreseeable future. Foreseeable is after the holiday season aka new year. This tells me nothing new is coming this year or early 2k18

I def think the timing of the release of the 1070Ti confirms this, or why bother if a Volta line-up is coming so soon after?

Tbh if I was buying a highish tier card now I'd go Vega, better future api support and much more performance to squeeze out of the architecture overall :)

Yea i was speculating it before the 1070ti tbh just looking at current state of affairs. But now with the 1070Ti and the Titan collectors edition it tells me nVidia are quite happy where they are. Not in any rush to push anything. Only competition pushes them to push something out of the pipeline.
It's unfortunate for PC gamers tbh. High GPU prices and slow increases in performance now.

"Volta for gaming, we haven't announced anything. And all I can say is that our pipeline is filled with some exciting new toys for the gamers, and we have some really exciting new technology to offer them in the pipeline. But for the holiday season for the foreseeable future, I think Pascal is just unbeatable,"

If they don't intend to put Volta in GeForce cards that takes on a bit of a different meaning.

Its also a strategy that could back fire on Nvidia.

They have a chance to put AMD an entire generation behind. If they release Volta rather than this Ampere filler they would be leaving AMD's line of cards way behind on performance/watt.

AMD customers would be jumping ship in droves.

By going with this Ampere they are giving AMD catch up time. So they will release Navi when Nvidia release Volta.

Rather than Nvidia releasing Volta first, then Navi and then Nvidia can refresh their line up again or react to AMD in what ever way necessary.

Now it looks even more necessary for a third party to enter the GPU wars.

Intel and Raja the stage is set.

Or Volta isn't coming to GeForce at all - current Pascal will be refreshed with something a bit more advanced for post DX11 APIs and then replaced with an entirely new architecture of the likes originally referred to as Einstein.

Exactly! Now are people getting it? No volta (by the way when i say no volta i mean for gaming anyways I have zero interest in compute cards) So looks like pascal will get a refresh!

Not exactly a bad thing. AMD has done well with refreshes 290-390 etc.

No, Ampere is not a Pascal refresh. It's more like a Volta refresh focused on gaming. Ampere will have Volta features, which Nvidia sees as useful for gaming and additional gaming features. But it won't get everything of Volta. Nvidia themself were talking about a "post-Volta" architecture coming next year, since then it's been clear that volta isn't coming to gaming. The only news is that we now have a name.

Comes down to price. Performance is not reason enough now to jump ship as AMD are certainly fast enough while being backed up with some very nice Freesync monitors.
