NVIDIA Volta with GDDR6 in early 2018?

Looks like the gaming Volta cards will be released in 2018(saw this on Overclock.net BTW):

I'm looking short term to base my decision on. 1080 vs Vega 64 for new Metro, New Wolfenstein, New Assasins Creed and Far Cry 5.

Leaning more towards 1080. Cheaper, cooler running and I prefer the sound of Gysnc over FreeSync.

But then you've got AMD saying Wolfenstein and Far Cry 5 will use Vega features. And I'm curious to see what HBCC, FP16 and this DSBR is all about. Oh and the promise of higher minimum frames.

I also have a Ryzen and curious to see if Ryzen/Vega has any benefits.

But then if I had to choose (which I sort of do due to lock in one of the two ecosystems (based on monitor technology) I'd rather choose Nvidia. Nvidia have proved over the recent years that they can bring out products regularly giving us upgrade paths. AMD however have taken two years get bring out a successor to the Fury X.

Also having a Gsync monitor allows me to benefit from Volta and what ever else Nvidia have in store. Where as with AND, maybe they have turned the corner but can I base my decision on faith alone.

Personally it is too close to Volta for me drop money on a 1080.

My understanding is Pascal was not much of a big jump in terms of architecture from Maxwell and Volta will be that big improvement. Plus it will likely be on 12nm process and GDDR6.

My expectation is 1080Ti performance to drop to around £400 with Volta, but not just that, it will run much more efficiently doing so, just like how the 1070 does vs a 980Ti. Now I could be wrong like I was with my expectation of Vega, but at least this time we are talking about Nvidia here who actually have a lot more R&D and are ahead in the game.

I know mate. But I'm still running a 970 and a terrible monitor. I've been waiting since March (when I bought my 1700 to upgrade monitor)

I don't want to wait any more. Volta isn't coming this year. According to article above.

In that case just read reviews on Monday and pull the trigger based the decision you make from that.

I am not as fussed I suppose as I have not waited, had a 1070 and a 1080 and played the games I wanted, so I am a lot more chilled and happy to wait until something is out that pleases me :p

I was also debating spending the extra £120 and go for the 1080ti, but I don't think I will.

I'm hoping a 1080 at 2560x1440p will be good for at least two more years for future titles.

Yeah, probably will.

I may even consider going for a G-Sync monitor again as I have lost confidence that AMD will be providing us with good price for performance cards going forward. All they seem to be doing is coming in late, running less efficient and asking for the same price. Not happening. In the past they always were improving price for performance, so I was happy to support and buy, they have not done that in years unfortunately :(

It is a shame as I want them to improve their market share, but cannot support them if they are going to price their cards like this when they come in 15 months late and run less efficient.

I have a GTX1080FE in a SFF rig and despite it being the worst GTX1080 version(apparently) its been a great card so far at qHD.

Having said that with GSync it does complicate things in your case,so perhaps wait and see how reviews pan for Vega out first?? In the end GSync will help you with making minimums more playable, but the AMD specific optimisations will also probably help and Vega is only at the start of its lifespan too so like I said it complicates things!!

Maybe have a good think about what games you will be putting the most hours into, and move on from there??

Well I've gone and agreed a price on a second hand 1080 G1 at £410.

It looks mint condition tho. Gysnc I like more than Freesync and I will be set up for Volta and what comes next from Nvidia.

I doubt I can go wrong with either.

Damn, that is expensive for a second hand 1080. Can get a brand new one for like £30-40 more today. Second hand to me means a decent reducing on price from a brand new, not a 5-10% discount.

Expensive? Cheapest G1 I can find is £500.

And the 1080 I was gonna buy is £520.

So I'm seeing it as £90-110 cheaper.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/58459/samsung-bumps-8gb-hbm2-production-ready-nvidia/index.html supposedly - so probably the "Titan" and ti cards. Though elsewhere there is a on record comment about highspec GDDR6 as well which wouldn't be on lower cards so hmm.

That's an old and partly wrong article. Samsung is providing the 8Gb HBM2 stacks for amd and if they ramp it and production will get bigger than Nvidia will at some point change V100 from 16GB to 32GB. But no consumer product will get 8 High HBM stacks. Next TITAN fits much better to Hynix 16Gbps GDDDR6.

Hah LOL I was reading another article and just googled some keywords for a link I could post here without checking it - didn't realise it was an older article.

How much do you think I should offer for a second hand 1080 G1? He claims it's two weeks old and I'm inclined to believe him.

I got one for £375 myself around the time 1080Ti came out which was in excellent condition. I also sold it for the same price. I would not pay more than that personally.

I think Nvidia will release Volta this year. Maybe a Titan or maybe a new naming scheme?
I doubt they'd wait a full year to release something new. Somethings brewing before years end?
