NXE Official thread

Out of curiousity and not seeing anything on here, will all new 360's produced after today come pre-shipped with the NXE? Im planning on grabbing a decent bundle just after christmas and was unsure how MS will handling the NXE with new consoles.

I would have thought that any console manufactured after today will have the NXE on it. It may take a month a two before it shows up in the shops though.

Well box is dead again, RROD on startup. Managed to create my avatar and then turned the box off for cake and now its borked again.

Overall I'm also impressed.

The avatar is gimmicky, but has proved highly comical already..
The Party Chat is just such an obvious idea that works brilliantly! why this wasn't in before I don't know!
I also like how you can see other 'parties' your mates are in!

The new 'guide' button blades is a bit slow, but a welcome upgrade to the previous version, it's cleaned things up a bit for me.

it gets 8/10 from me..

Overall very happy with the new interface :) Bit annoyed that 1920x1200 support still hasn't been included :( Hopefully it will come in a future patch...

Quick question which is kinda off topic. I've got a 26" Sony Bravia HDTV, Xbox 360 is plugged in via HDMI, I can select 1080i or optimal, I've tried the optimal and it changes it to 1360x768. Im not a tech wiz at resolutions and all that jazz, but just need to what would be better.

Cheers

not that impressed with the update to be honest. the one feature i've always wanted was support for 1440x900

now i have that available and i get these poxy black bars at the top and bottom of my screen, even though my screens native resolution is 1440x900

Any news when letter boxing on 16:10 resolutions will be fixed?

It reduces it back down to 16:9 and shoves 1" lines on top/bottom

It won't ever be 'fixed'. The issue is that the xbox 360 renders games at 16:9 resolutions, usually 720p. When you ask it to display on a monitor with a different resolution the xbox still renders at the same resolution however the built in scaler chip will increase the resolution as necessary.

In order to display a 16:10 image without cutting the sides off or displaying borders at the top or bottom, the 360 would have to render the game at 16:10 in the first place which it will never do.

What you're asking for is the scaler chip to render an extra 1/10th of the resolution as opposed to just scaling, create extra picture if you will, which just isn't possible.

See above, what you're asking for isn't possible as far as i know.

[EDIT] Thought of a half-decent analogy to explain it, basically the scaler chip is like a magnifying glass, making the resolution (or image if you'd prefer) bigger than it is in order to display better on screens with larger resolutions. Now, if you were to take a picture and hold a magnifying glass up to it, it would look nice and big which is great, however, asking to get rid of the black borders is the same as expecting the magnifying glass to allow you to see off the edges of the picture, you're wanting to see something that isn't there.

Not the best analogy, but it'll do.

You should refer to the specs of the TV. It can accept 1080 via HDMI but no 26" LCD accept "True" 1080, the only maximum i'm afraid is at 768.

Well...its completely frozen up on the friends interface thing 3 times and Saints Row 2 crashed twice which it never has before - it doesnt autosave either so i've lost about an hours progress.

Quality.

then why offer support for 16:10 resolutions!?

It is support for it though. Basically before the update people running at 16:10 resolutions without 1:1 pixel mapping on their monitor were having the image stretched vertically by just over 1/10th so everything looked a little strange, now the image has been 'squashed' back to its original size and the area that the image was stretched into is replaced by a black border.

It's a trade-off, a more accurate picture but black borders. If you don't want the black borders tell it to display in 720p and you'll get a stretched image without borders.

Yeah mine decided to freeze whilst I was browsing the new "form over function" friends list. Turned it back on... 3 red lights  No way I am paying M$ for a repair and I've already spent £569 on 360's since release so there is no way I'm buying another one.

Sony's offering doesn't really impress me and would feel like a step down after the 360, the Wii isn't really what I'm after so it looks like its back to PC gaming :(

The console was faultless before this update

Just read the last few pages and it seems people either like it or it has crashed on them or killed their consoles

Thankfully no problems here and I really like it. Playing GTA with no disc chattering away was a big bonus.

I have been through my achievements and removed all of the zero score arcade demos, but can't find my 'points vs max possible points' anywhere? Can anyone else find it?

What's the point in having marketplace in the mini guide, then having to quit out the game you are playing to actually view it, kind of defeats the point no?
