The form for requesting an iPhone unlock is now available here.

Pay Monthly customers
Your iPhone can be unlocked at anytime free of charge. If you unlock your handset and place a non-O2 sim into it, you will still have to honour the remainder of the minimum term on your contract.

iPhone Pay & Go customers
For iPhone on Pay & Go, unlocking can take place 12 months after you've bought your iPhone for a one-off £15 fee which will be deducted from your airtime balance.

What do I need to do?
Firstly, complete the unlocking form - it will take up to 14 days for the iPhone to be unlocked and we'll text you to confirm the unlock request. Then place a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect to iTunes via a USB cable. iTunes will confirm that the iPhone has been successfully unlocked.

Having trouble unlocking your iPhone? Visit our FAQs section.

Word is Vodafone contract iPhones will be unlocked OTB, pressure baby pressure :D

Does it much matter any more? you can buy it on three out of four main networks (soon at least). You'd have to be a bit insane to buy one on a contract to unlock it immediately and use it on another network surely?

If you're going abroad for any length of time it's useful.

Takes the mickey a bit really that PAYG have to pay to have it unlocked, particularly when they've paid for it completely upfront.

If you have a contract, but use a PAYG iphone, can you have it unlocked for free? Would be interesting to know..

I know that, I mean if i want to unlock it (not that i do but youknow) would i have to top up that original sim with what, 25/15quid? 10 to activate and 15 to unlock?

That's probably something you're best checking directly with O2 to find out about. If you do and get an answer, can you let us know :)

£25 is a lot cheaper than a lot of places will charge for unlocking such ie "not to be talked" but also even unlocking bb5 phones charges are similar,,

Despite the common misconception, you haven't paid for it upfront, you've certainly paid a lot but it's still subsidized by o2 even at that price (whether it actually gets subsidized is difficult to say but accounting wise it is).

Filled this in today :)

I will be swapping my tariff to Simplicity in December, sell the handset on eBay unlocked and buy myself a White 3G S on PAYG

Is the IMEI needed in this at all?

I had a 3G on £35p/m at launch week (July 2008) and then got a Pay/Go 3GS at launch day June 2009. iPhone 3G contract SIM into the 3GS, and iPhone 3G sold.
So I guess it should work (it's all been done properly) but I guess the IMEI they'll be expecting that SIM to be in is my original 3G not the 3GS.
