Oblivion levelling

Whilst, i quite liked the auto levelling at first, i too am finding the concept not so appealing now that i'm at a higher level. I do feel that after getting to level 10 or higher when bandits start dropping good weapons and armour then it starts getting ridiculous, and that the sense of achievement of getting a really cool weapon or armour it totally stripped away. Since we are on PC, we can but only hope that bethusda releases a patch which will give us an option of enabling or disabling the auto levelling system, and fixing that crap UI.

I was fine with the auto levelling thing at the start but the more I lay the game and advance now the more it is less rewarding.

Fair enough the game is big and you can go anywhere but it would have been much better if you couldn't go to certain areas safely, or maybe at certain times at night.

I'm only about level 7 or 8 and i'm an Imperial Knight, and I haven't had a challenge in the game for a good while which is pretty boring.

If your all finding it too easy and less of a challenge why not increase the difficulty slider in the gaming options
I agree that certain area's should be off limits until your of a suitable level and not able to attempt the appropriate quests. As your doing the guild quests you have to do them in order anyways so generally you should be facing monsters of equal strength.
It's only if you go wondering off and explore independantly of the quests that I see this being an issue. I know Oblivion is meant to be completely free form game where you can go anywhere and do anything but if your unhappy with the level scaling i would adivise doing the main/guild quests instead off being a lone wolf.
I completely agree with people thoughts on the arena. I feel each opponent should be of a certain level and should be a milestone as you advance yourself so you should only be able to win if you've aquried the skills necessary. The only way I can see this failing is that if you went to the arena later in the game when your a high level character the earlier opponents wouldn't be a challenge atall and a complete waste of time.

sure the game may have been balanced a bit better but considering the complexity and huge nature of this game I feel they can be forgiven for a few short comings:D
If they do release a patch to address all your issues though more's the better ;)

Hmmm, I'm starting to get annoyed by the levelling now as well - having been firmly on the fence at the start. I was riding along to Chorrol and got jumped by a couple of bandits. Now, I should have been able to jump off my steed and dispatch them with a couple of blows. But no, they were rock hard and had magic weapons - I was in a fight to the death instead

Trouble is, I can't see them patching the PC version and leaving all the Xbox owners with the problem :(

What does everyone think of my new character:

Race: Nord
Starsign: The Theif
Specialisation: Combat

Major skills:
Restoration
Illusion
Alchemy
Blade
Security
Speechcraft
Light Armour

Is this a good combination? I want to be good at combat but from last time I found myself using a lot of theif sort of abilities and my lockpicking skill was lacking. I don't want to screw myself over like last time.

first part i totally agree with, if its too hard/easy... do what you do in every other game and play with the difficulty level!?

as for the second part... there are quests that you need to be higher levels for.
i've been told a couple of times now i need to be level 20+ to do certain quests.

Have a look at some of the mods that people have made like here http://www.tessource.net/files/category.php?id=24 There are loads that later how the level scalling work. Some set the levels for creatures so they don't change. There is another one that equipts bandits and the such with only steel/iron stuff. Not tried these yet but will when I go home tonight.

About these mods - they sound interesting. But can they be uninstalled easily? And does this mess up your saved game or anything? I would like to try some but am worried about it messing things up if I change my mind - or if an official patch comes out that renders the mod useless etc.

The Elder Scrolls games are infinitely mod-friendly!

It seems like you didn't play Morrowind so are unfamiliar with the system, but with most mods you can just check which ones you want to load within the Data Files section of the game launcher. :)

Ah OK, thanks. I did play Morrowind.....briefly. It wasn't that I didn't like it - I think I was really into another game at the time and it got forgotten. I think I still have it sitting around here somewhere :)

I don't really see the need in speechcraft. You can do all that kind of stuff if your 50+ in illusion. I would perhaps replace it with something else like destruction or alteration?

EDIT: i'm a mage, can you tell :p

Will it do any harm to keep it? I just find things go much smoother with a good speechcraft skill.

No, it's just you could use another major skill, like block (good for when you get into trouble with melee characters), destruction (to give you that added offensive or defensive edge; drain skills, damage attributes and health directly) or even marksman (if your a theif, you can do a lot of damage before you even have to get your sword out). Now, i think about alteration is probably as good as block, but since you want to be an orc, block will start off at a higher skill level.

The only reason i think speechcraft is useless is because you can charm, enrage and increase the disposition of characters using high(ish) level illusion magic. Although, orcs to have a really low base personaility.

I think its all been made with the console in mind. Like most, I'm now getting sick of repeating myself constantly to get my minor skills up - I'm running around, jumping like a fool to get my Acrobatics and Athletics skills boosted.

The fact that you have to have your major skills as minor ones to make it balanced is just crazy IMO.

I want...I want...

I want experience points! - I want to think "a few more kills and I'll get to the next level" rather than "I need to run in circles and jump around a bit more like a goon to get my athletics up and I'll get to the next level"

I want fixed level monsters - I don't want to smack up a bandit when I'm level 1, then come back when I'm level 12 only to find he's now just as good. I want to beat him at level 1 - then come back at level 12 and gib him with 1 hit :p

I know I'm just repeating what others have said, but I'm finding the game infuriating. Infuriating because, there's a brilliant game staring me in the face but its hidden behind some poor (console driven?) choices.

I should be crafting, creating and building my charachter how I want - not how the game wants me to build it in order to succeed. Thats not what RPG'ing is about.

Amen, bethesda really made some screw ups.

I've never known a design decision that has devided a forum quite as much as this has on the official Elder Scrolls forum.
The level scaling is really like marmite.

My main gripe with this is that if you find an NPC that's too hard to beat it used be a case of, oh well come back in another level. Now I find it's a case of save/reload/reload/reload/reload/.../save once I get it right.

It's not enjoyable.

Jokester

I'm level 21 now and have yet to actually find an NPC I can't defeat with at most one reload (most likely as I forgot to bring a health potion along or something).

I blitzed through the arena this evening from zero to grand champion and ended up fighting half the fights hand-to-hand despite this being a minor skill and me not being proficient in it at all.

With an enchanted weapon then clannfears, atronarches, daedra etc are all pretty easy, 4 or 5 swings and they're down.

I have the difficulty just above half at the min and definately need to increase it some.

At the moment I'm enjoying it but it's not that challenging - surely this shows that the enemy perhaps levels within a range (decided by type of enemy), but doesn't litterally match you. If they did, I'd be having a much tougher time.
