Oblivion

For the people who are worrying about what other people are saying about levelling complications, really don't pay much attention to it. I haven't and it's going absolutely fine. If you really want to make a perfect character and spend every moment worrying about what skills you need to level or don't, then go ahead and read the guides but it will just delay you and not really enhance the game play at all.

Currently I've spent 50 hours on the game, completed the mages guild quests, won the arena competitions, knights of the nine crusader quest, most misc inn quests, and I'm half way through the fighters guild quest and have only closed 10 oblivion gates out of a possible 100.

I haven't even touched the main quest (20 hours?), daedric quests (12+ hours), house quests, shivering isles quests (30+ hours?), thieves guild quests, dark brotherhood quests, 90+ oblivion gates (which each take between 10-30 minutes)

It's a massive game that sucks you in and to be honest doesn't get boring and doesn't feel like a grind at all, I'd highly recommend it on a high spec pc, it's faster, looks better, mods can be added, and as craig said, oblivion and all the expansions can be had for £20 on the GOTY edition. Having played a good 30 hours on the Xbox I can definitely say it's laggy, slow loading, looks terrible, and no mods can be added which really sucks. If I wasn't going to Uni soon I'd definitely easily rack up 150+ hours completing it.

Technically there's an infinite number. There are (IIRC) 98 possible sites, but the game ensures that a certain number are always open - the exact number depends on where in the main plot you are, with (again IIRC) 50 maximum open at any open time. Close one, another opens instantly. Once you've closed fifty, they just start opening again in old locations. I got bored at 56, and I believe the record is about 200.

Ah my bad, that's what I read on wiki.

Silly question time. Played through it a few times but have just wondered about levelled items you get. If say I do the Battlehorn Castle and get the sword and shield at level 1, will they both increase in levels as I do, or do they stay as the same level as I picked them up?

Depends on the item. A normal sword will give you x damage multiplied by your skill in Blade.

Sword types improves a la - Iron, Steel, Silver, Dwarven, Elven, Glass, Ebony, Daedric - as well as worn or fine versions of some.

The better your blade skill, the more damage you'll do with an iron blade, but the same would go for a silver blade, so if you find a better sword (or whatever item) keep it. With magical items, the stats they improve dont improve over time, so a ring that gives 2 points enhancement to Destruction magic will always give 2 points.

Hope that helps!

A lot of the items don't level with you, so it's kind of a waste.

If you had a fast enough PC the graphics would be a lot better. I never used any mods tho, were they any good?

The main thing i found easier was the key mapping. I thought on the 360 the controls were laid out thoughtfully and worked very well. Where as on the PC i thought it was like they had just ported it across and the controls didn't seem to really gel together verys well. Could be quite awkard in places

Have you never played a FPS on PC?! They are the same controls. You've been playing consoles too long :p

No. The only stuff which can be re-levelled in vanilla Oblivion is the KoTN weapons and armour. In that case you put it on the stand in the basement and activate the stand - the game will then give you an option to upgrade. The AC doesn't change AFAIK, but the enchantment level does.

Otherwise it's mods, as H2F Scott says.

Excellent mod, make sure you turn on all the options in game by clicking on the Quest Award Leveler item in your bag.

Make sure you use the link I posted above, the one H2F posted doesn't include the DLC award leveller.

Oblivion is no longer that hardware demanding, I get smooth fps on a AMD X2 with 8800GT everything maxed out.

Depends what res you play it at and how smooth you want it to be. :)

Finally got round to picking up GotY edition today, £19.99, not that bad given the scale of the game.
Didn't realise the size of Quarl's pack 3, don't think I'll be downloading that today...

Guard overhall and UI mod are definately required before even starting.
3rd time I've bought Oblivion now, what an idiot. :D

Make sure you get the unofficial oblivion patch for the original game as well as for Shivering Isles, it fixes hundreds of quests and other bugs.

Also when you're looking to do more quests and maybe looking for somewhere to live/play around in get the official mods (don't forget to get the Unofficial Official Mods patch if you get them).

I also recommend Operation optimization and streamline as they will only benefit you, they simply change settings to make the game run better.

And don't forget Darnified UI!

Also check out TweakGuides: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html - they have a brilliant guide on tweaks and mods.

And I'm sure you know about UESP by now if you've bought it 3 times :p: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page - brilliant website for quest help and other Oblivion stuff.

Since I've got Oblivion for the 360 I've just gone and ordered it for the pc. GOTY edition should be with me tomorrow :D

Looking through the different mods I'm completely lost as to what to get. After reading various posts on this here, I was going to get OOO and quarl's texture pack for definate (if they work together) but aside from that I don't know where to start.

I've got a pretty decent machine so I'm going to try and make the game look as good as possible. Also, I assume the mod manager is a must have and would I install the mods after the patches or before?

That guard overhall has already made the game far far better, PC is definately the way forward. I'd originally played it on a 6600 setup before just swapping over to the 360 version, what a mistake...
Typical Adventurer class for me (I've no imagination), heavy armour and other skills I don't use as the main. :)

It's running alright on the 7900GTX in my laptop right now but the sooner I get the desktop up and running, the better.

Do all official patches etc, first. Then do the unofficial patches, then Qarl's texture pack, then your other mods.

Cheers, just downloading stuff now ready for tomorrow. Annoyed at the download speed cap on tesnexus though  150kb/sec unless I pay :(

EDIT:

I've got the following ready for install:

  • Quarl's Texture Pack
  • No Psychic Guards
  • Armorylab
  • Quest award leveller
  • DarNified UI
  • Unofficial patch
  • mod manager
  • Frostcrag reborn

Going to wait for another play through before getting OOO I think.
