Obsidian New RPG Avowed

You can play Balatro for 30 mins and come back

Started playing Avowed a few days ago. Enjoying it but I don't tend to experiment much with different loadouts. At the moment I am using an axe and a shield with a few skills from the Fighter and Ranger tree.

Did people prefer other styles more? 2H? Spellcasting? Pistols?

Mostly enjoying this. Exploration is quite enjoyable and have found some fun bits from off hand npc comments. Got out of the planned map accidentally in the first area so messed around a lot there. Using the Arquebus, which I got as a reward, currently which does quite well but very early days.

Wand + Grimoire is the most fun in my opinion.

I tried two-handed weapons, wands, sword and shield, but settled on pistol and frost grimoire by about halfway through act II. Worked really well, especially once I had enough ability points to use the higher level spells.

I'm dual wielding pistols now.

I've got to say, I'm really enjoying this. The graphics are about 10 years out of date but it runs well enough, no stuttering that I've noticed and no annoying bugs I've come across (other than spiders and beetles)

The World doesn't feel so big that it's a slog, but there's enough content with side quests and bounties and general exploring always turns up a nice tingly treasure box to help with the upgrades. Wish more games had a sound effect indicating treasure was nearby to be honest.

I've got subtitles on and am skipping quickly through a lot of dialogue and I've no interest in reading any of the books laying around but the gameplay is engaging enough. At least it doesn't have 100's of identical looking dungeons to crawl through. It's the sort of game that fits in with my life rather than some 100 hour bloated thing.

Yeah, I liked the game overall. It's kind of simple, but does the basics pretty well and the combat kept me intersted for a good while.

What you using in the second slot? I had an arquebus there for sniping, which was pretty good, but could also see a second grimoire and/or melee being useful.

watched a few reciews on this and it looks like a decent game. I am not sure it will run nicely on my current set up though. Only sporting an i7 9700 and a 2070 super. Will i get away with maybe turning down some of the bells and whistles graphically so this will still run at a decent frame rate or I am out of luck. If this needs ray tracing by default like the Indiana Jones game I might be somewhat buggered as I am not sure the RT capabilities on the 2070 super are up to the job for newer titles now.

I'm about 20 hours in now and this feels like a solid 7/10 game for me. It does a lot of things well and i'm enjoying it well enough, but it's quite clear that it had a fairly torturous development and it feels half baked in places (companions etc.)

I am 16 hours in, just entered second region and I 100% agree with this.
It is pretty fun, but it does not do anything super cool or interesting, storytelling is very bland so far. But world looks nice enough and combat is snappy. It is an interesting contrast to KCD2, both are medieval-ish first person RPGs, but their design is basically the opposite from each other. KCD is all about immersion and authenticity, while Avowed is all about arcadey breezy junkfood style fun.

I removed it along with Atomfall from my wishlist. Too many games to play and replay to settle for a 7/10 experience for me personally.

I get it. I am now about 30 hours in and it seems like end is still far away but I am already getting tired of it..

It ain't no KCD2 then :p

I am hoping to get some gaming time tonight and finally get to that Italian mission you mentioned :D

I eventually uninstalled it after finishing the first act/big map area, considered pushing on but the game was so bland and uninspiring I just couldn't bring myself to continue, especially when my gaming time is already quite limited.

If I was a decade or two younger with less to deal with I might have pushed on, but a story driven 30-40 + hour game needs to offer a lot more to keep my attention and be worth my while now.

i'm curious what do you feel is better games right now? KCD2 is a clear winner i'm sure. i'm yet to play it but 1 was excellent. i guess my curiousity is that you rate it a 7/10 game, which for me would be fairly high compared to most new games i've played recently.

Right now playing KCD2. Getting close to the end. After that will either resume STALKER 2, or Silent Hill 2 or Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth or God of War Ragnarok.

I could go on.. All these games i consider more than 7/10. Most 9/10 :D

I am still playing Avowed - some 35 hours in now, in the third area and about to go to fourth - I would still give it 7/10.
RPGs I played in last decade that I enjoyed more, by order of release:

Witcher III (10)
Elex (8)
Kingdom Come Deliverance (10)
Disco Elysium (9)
Wasteland 3 (8)
Cyberpunk 2077 (10)
Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos (9)
Enderal: Forgotten Stories (9)
Baldur's Gate III (9)
Kingdom Come Deliverance II (10)

Interestingly, all of them except Wasteland are European.
US studios have gotten much worse over the last decade.
