Hi, I'm trying to find a web host for my daughter (16) who wants to design a web site. She has very little web site knowledge but I want a provider that gets you started relatively easier but then allows you to get into the more complex stuff. How is vidahost for an absolute beginner or anyone recommend a different provider as a starter web host.

Depends what you want the host to offer? Website designs that you just add content to? Or what...

She loves music and wants to create a music review site - a start set of templates always helps. I think vidahost is probably as good as I need and if it isn't we can always cancel. All depends on how savy she proves, some of the more mainstream seem to offer standard templates but I don't know how good these prove to be

Guess you could go with Vidahost and get setup with Wordpress. They have an auto installer for it, and it works well. Not hard to customise either.

Looks like it's running phpBB - you'd be better sticking with Linux hosting.

I'd recommend using one of the following :

Disclaimer...

I do work for Krystal, but the TSO and Vidahost guys do a great job also, so you can't go too far wrong with any of them - check http://www.ochostreview.co.uk/ to back all of this up!

Stay clear of people offering "Unlimited" everything, and other bad companies such as godaddy, 1&1

I do work for Krystal yep.

I'd had a few glasses of vino last night, and didn't want another person getting rubbish hosting from a company offering the world, and then delivering a terrible service - So I do apologise, I should have taken more time to write a better response - I didn't mean it to be blatant advertising!

I've updated it now with more impartiality.

cHk4 if you have any questions on how to do the move, no matter which host you choose, then ask away!

Vidahost- One of those ups and downs....
This reminds me of why I'm with them, while at the same time being just a tad frustrating.

So, on a 9:30pm on a bank holiday evening, I decide to do a little spambot clearing and an upgrade on my site. Everything goes well, until I manage to accidentally delete the config file for my site :s
First obvious thing to do is to try the advertised integrated backup system- Not working (PHP file not found error of some description). Fair enough- I submit a low priority ticket, please can you restart the backups or whatever?

Transpires it's a known issue for some sites, and they're in the process of replacing it, with a 'superior system' but it would really be nice to have known that in the first place.
Can't fault the response and dedication of the guys there, especially at this time, but would have been nice to have known that in the first place.

Best & Cheapest Domain Registrar? Looking to get either a .com or a .co.uk

Doesn't matter if it is UK or US based.
It would be good if the cost doesn't change, £2 first year, £2452 the 2nd year, i hate those bloody scams!

Cheers!

I'm after some advice guys.

I'm going to buy a domain name.

I need 1 page, a front page which will display an image and some links.

I would also like an email address (a mailbox would be ideal but forwarding will suffice).

As this is just a little mess around personal project I want to keep it as cheap as possible.

I was thinking of buying the domain name through one of the registrars linked in the OP then possibly finding somewhere that offers free hosting however, if any of the registrars gives you a free holding page that would be ideal. It basically won't use any bandwidth.

Thanks in advance.

Hey ShortW,

A few months ago we ran a promotion for £1 for hosting for our birthday. I'm pretty sure there are a few plans left.

It'll cost you £1 for the hosting, and whatever domain you want ( note the discount is applied at the end ) - Usual price of the hosting is £30/year - you don't have to renew, more info on that page.

Having the hosting will let you upload your page, and make proper e-mail addresses.

Edit: P.S - I'm not sure why we have a rating of less than 2 on the ocuk host review site - it looks like our overall rating is being divided by over 900 reviews? Looks like a bit of a bug :)

Hi all,

I'm in need of a new Website host (That can host wordpress) I am currently using VidaHost but space is now becoming an issue. They did offer me a 20% discount on the next package up £50per year, 10GB package.

However i've found these: http://www.cloudnext.co.uk/web-hosting/

There basic package is vidaHosts £50 package and seems a no brainier really.

But talk me out of it :D lol
