OcUK Dadsnet thread

All I can say is that the Urbo we have is unsuitable for gravel.

I should have sussed this out, but my daughter has just started going to nursery and guess what, she keeps getting sick. She's been there for a total of 4 days over the last two weeks. First she got a big rash all over her face and a fever, now she has a stomach bug (and is feeling very very needy as a result). Hope she catches up with the rest of the kids soon!

We had the Urbo too, it was terrible and still quite bulky. We changed to an Oyster Max and although one of the front wheels went a bit iffy (too much weight on the buggy when going down a curb - the wife thinks you can hang a weeks shopping on them) it held up no problem at all till my son grew out of it.

We bought second hand too, it was easily washable and chances are your own child will trash it anyway! :)

Get used to it, she will have a stream of coughs and colds and fevers for the next few years!

This, it's a rare occasion in the 6 months our son has been going to nursery that there isn't some kind of cold, bug or other sickness doing the rounds in the house. I used to consider my immune system to be pretty decent, but I'm always ill these days

Just out of interest at what age did you guys think you would like to have a child.

I'm just now at 35 thinking it would be nice to have one.

For me it was always when I had a level of financial security. You'll never been "ready" to have kids, but at least enough to feed them and put a roof over their heads. I hit that stage in my late 20's :)

[Edit] I had been married 5 years too, so "stable" finances and stable relationship

Greetings Dads of OCUK.

All being well I'll be joining the ranks in August, right now we are looking a prams/travel systems and I'm totally baffled by the array of choice and conflicting reviews. We are looking for something that can handle gravel paths and country parks as we have a dog and will be out for long walks as a family it also needs to fold up small enough to fit into a Seat Ibiza.

Contenders currently are the Upababy Vista, Babystyle Oyster Max and the Jane Crosswalk, does anyone have experience with these or other suggestions that meet my needs? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

We have the Uppababy Vista and specifically chose for similar reasons to you it because we live in the country on a country lane and walk along gravels paths etc. Admittedly, gravel paths are never going to be a joy no matter what you have, and often we use our Babybjorn instead - especially when out walking our dogs:

It's folding footprint is ok, but not as great as those cheapo buggys you see (I doubt any travel system would be) - we currently have a Mazda 3 as our main car and it's caused no problems storage wise.

My wife is the main user of it (aside from our son!) and she loves it - no reliability or durability issues and no real complaints (other than the price). I had more of a cursory interest as spending so much time looking at something which cost as much as it did, yet didn't have an engine - was depressing me more and more.

We also looked at an iCandy system, but I think decided against it due to increased expansion cost if we had another baby - not sure specifically what it was.

To an extent they are much of a muchness but

I never really thought about a set age. I knew I wanted to be at a certain point in my career, own a house with enough room and be married. That happened to be in my mid-30s. Men have the luxury of not having to think about age as much.

We have the Uppababy Vista too, we originally bought it 6 years ago to use with our eldest and it is still working perfectly today with our youngest. It's very durable.

Thanks guys, the vista was a strong contender but we were a little concerned about off road capability, thanks for clearing that up. We'll definitely be getting some sort of harness system for the more adventurous treks, but good to know the vista can handle a muddy path. Just need to make sure it goes into the boot, but there a few shops nearby where we can try that out.

For us it was my other half that had the ticking clock that pushed things forwards. I'm 31 this weekend, we still rent but are able to afford a 3 bed and nursery, bills etc without being left broke.

It was a case of now or never, but given more time I don't think either of us were in a mad rush to have a baby. Now, of course, we are absolutely smitten and wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm glad I had her at 30 though because I didn't want to be ancient by the time she was older and doing lots of outdoor activities

If you want to go for long walks, and your child is old enough/big enough, I have to say that those backpacks are amazing. The ones with an aluminium frame. They're very very comfy, secure, and useful as you can put stuff in them too. Plus we don;'t have to worry about a pushchair when walking in the south downs, or various countryside walks around us.

Check out Emmaljunga. They're hideously expensive but there are plenty around second hand. Extremely well made and robust with proper wheels. (Tyres and inner tubes!)

Hello all :)

I am about to make a big step IMO her cot/bed she has had since 6 months I am about to remove the front pannel and turn it into a bed.

She turns 3 in June, what age did your little one changd?

I have put a gate on her door so she cannot walk around at night.... Very nervous.

I think my daughters been in a proper bed since she was 2 or so, she doesn't tend to wander. When we first did it she wandered around for the first couple of days because freedom lol but she's OK normally. Downside is that she wanders thru to wake us up at 5.45 most days.

We changed my daughter to a proper bed just before she was 2. Quite good now as it makes bed time is easier as she wants to lay in it all the time.....
