OcUK Dadsnet thread

Greetings Dads of OCUK.

All being well I'll be joining the ranks in August, right now we are looking a prams/travel systems and I'm totally baffled by the array of choice and conflicting reviews. We are looking for something that can handle gravel paths and country parks as we have a dog and will be out for long walks as a family it also needs to fold up small enough to fit into a Seat Ibiza.

Contenders currently are the Upababy Vista, Babystyle Oyster Max and the Jane Crosswalk, does anyone have experience with these or other suggestions that meet my needs? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
We have a Babyjogger - Versa GT. Very good for rougher terrain. Very well built, and much less expensive than the Uppababy. I'm not sure how small the Uppababy folds, but the Babyjogger is not small, nor is it lightweight.

Friends have the Vista, and on balance, I think we'd have been better off going for that. (Plus it readily converts into a double. We bought the wrong Versa model, and ended up giving it to friends and buying again - but we stuck with Babyjogger).

Also to echo the babycarrier recommendations - this is by far my preferred means of carrying the boys anywhere where terrain is rough. Some people get on with them and some don't - as a result, a lot of immaculate carriers end up on eBay. We got two for £15 each. Both were like new (until we thrashed them). One is more comfortable for the boys when they fall asleep - their heads don't loll so much in it - I'd say that's worth considering.

Hope that's of help.

Thanks man, we are going to look on at some on Thursday evening, the Vista is the current fave and if it fits in the car then we will most likely get one. I'll definitely keep an eye out on Ebay and gumtree for some carriers, what are good brands to start with?

BLOODY KIDS!

2 year old has come home with a tummy bug again! Seems he's sick every week at the moment, always bringing home something from nursery. Which means sickness just lingers in our house for ages

My boy haa finally decided to take some steps unaided. Did it a few times yesterday but now nothing today. He's also become a nightmare at bed time. Standing up and crying but not crying, throwing his gro bag off and stripping his top off. We leave him for a while then pit him down again but he gets worst then so we wait longer and do it again. Eventually he finally gives up. He's 18 months. Thought this only happened after 2 yrs old haha

It's weird I would say my daughter has been ill once since she started nursery at 9 months (so 2.5 years or so). Hopefully my son will be the same. With regards to the plane, we've started weening our son a month ago and aside from him being a food monster, it's so nice to deal with a solid dirty nappy. I do kind of miss the noises tho as it did make me chuckle when he did. Also took them both swimming on Sunday and he was so placid, even to the point of kicking his feet lol.

Weird how a solid turd can make you smile, right?

My daughter just poked me in the eye, which isn't that big a deal, except she has had yellow gloop coming out her eyes for the last few days so now I get to have it as well! That said, she's in much better form tonight and it was great to see more smiles today. Currently lying in bed with her watching some Peppa pig and all my griping about being ill seems longer so than yesterday. That said, I'll still be paying £250 for this week's nursery while my other half takes a week off work to watch little gloopy eyes here

All this parenting stuff has really made me appreciate what my mum and dad went through 30 odd years ago! Never really thought about it despite them giving their 2pence every now and again.

Makes me see them in a different light too.

Know how you feel, I'm 1/2 a world away from my parents now and really appreciate it when they're still there to offer guidance. Strangely I miss them more since we had our daughter.

Dam if my little one moved back to NZ think I'd follow her!

Anyone ever had any experience with their kid having a big head? :X

My son went to the doctor this morning and they've sent him to the hospital so they can do a scan on his head just to be on the safe side as it's "a bit big" as the doctor put it, he was above the top line when they measured his head as a baby but didn't say anything then as they took one look at me and saw it ran in the family. I had a massive head when I was a baby, still do, couldn't wear caps unless they were the adjustable ones. Seems a lot of stress to put us through, although I guess I should be glad that they're being so cautious.

Poor boy, tummy bug and now has to sit in the hospital all day until he can be seen :(

He's been to the hospital and they've checked him and said it's fine. Nothing to worry about. They took all his measurements again and he's now on the top line for everything so all in proportion.

A lot of people comment how he looks a lot older than 2. He's bigger than most 3 year olds at nursery and all the babies he's grown up with he's flew past in terms of physical development.

Should have known when he was a 10lb baby :p

Is it wrong/bad parenting that I enjoyed some peace and quiet while my daughter was at nursery yesterday? She can be very demanding.

We put Joe in nursery one afternoon a week so that my partner could have some r&r. Joe also benefits from being with the other kids in nursery. Also when I'm off work we can enjoy a little couple time for an afternoon too.

It's only a bit of a one off as I normally work but it was nice to chill in the afternoon lol.

Now is as good a time as any to join the thread I guess, due my first in August!!

I'm currently at the stage of looking at how much everything costs and wondering how exactly people afford all this while still putting food on the table! Buggys for example, its a metal frame and 4 wheels ... how can they justify asking £1,000 for that?!

Anyway, panicking and ranting aside its a very exciting time and can't wait to meet the little one already.
